The Edward Orton Jr. Ceramic Foundation manufactures and sells temperature monitoring devices used to confirm process temperatures and measure heat work in high-temperature applications. Its products include pyrometric cones, Temp Tabs, Temp Cheks, and PTCR rings, serving customers in refractory, glass, and ceramic industries. The organization also produces thermal analysis instruments such as dilatometers, glass testing equipment, gradient furnaces, and electronic controllers for professional potters.
In addition, Orton operates a full-service, independent materials testing laboratory that supports industrial clients with specialized testing and analysis. Team members contribute to high-precision products that support quality, safety, and innovation in thermal processing worldwide.
Seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Lead Machinist to join our small manufacturing team. The ideal candidate will have a background in manual machining processes, CNC programming, and precision measurement. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work with manufacturing equipment and contribute to high-quality production standards in a dynamic environment. Candidates should possess mechanical knowledge and experience with various machining tools and techniques.
Duties- Operate CNC and manual milling machines, lathes, and other machining equipment
- Read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings to produce precise parts.
- Program CNC machines
- Set up tooling, fixtures, and cutting tools including calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, and other precision measuring instruments
- Conduct quality checks to ensure parts meet specifications
- Maintain machine calibration and perform routine maintenance on shop equipment
- Utilize hand tools, power tools and tooling to assemble or modify parts as needed
- Follow safety protocols
- Assist with product improvement, engineering and production assembly.
- Support maintenance and tooling requirements of hydraulic and mechanical presses
- Minimum 5 years experience with CNC programming and operation of milling machines and lathes
- Understanding of blueprint reading and mechanical drawings
- Familiar with CAD software such as AutoCAD and Solid Works
- Ability to use precision measuring instruments including calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, etc.
- Mechanical aptitude
- Basic math skills for measurements and calculations related to machining tolerances
- Experience with hand tools, power tools, welding equipment and tooling setup
- Forklift operation is a plus
- Experience with purchasing, inventory control and working with vendors is a plus.
This position requires a dedicated individual capable of working in a manufacturing setting. The successful candidate will demonstrate technical expertise across multiple machining disciplines while adhering to safety standards.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $28.00 - $32.00 per hour
