Surface Preparation Specialist (Abrasive Media) — Heavy Steel

What you will impact

Surface integrity: remove scale, paint, grease, tar, rust, and dirt from steel tanks

Finish quality: achieve specified profiles and verify conformance to requirements

Safety and uptime: set, monitor, and maintain blast systems for consistent, safe performance

Key responsibilities

Clean products to remove grease and dirt before blasting

Load specified grades of sand, grit, or steel shot into blast hoppers

Inspect, start, and maintain blast delivery equipment; regulate pressures and media flow Direct blast nozzles with precision; use scrapers, brushes, or abrasive papers when required

Examine finished material to ensure it meets quality specifications

Report directly to the Shop Supervisor Physical requirements

Standing 8+ hours per day Lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs Pushing/pulling up to 50 lbs Walking across varied surfaces (gravel, concrete, asphalt)
Frequent twisting, bending, and reaching (forward and overhead)
Ability to wear a respirator for over 4 hours daily

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent (required)
Prior abrasive blasting or related experience (preferred)
Knowledge of field concepts, practices, and procedures, or willingness to train on new equipment/processes

Working knowledge of manual sand/grit blasting machines, materials, and methods

Familiarity with hand tools (chipping hammer, wire brush) and power tools (grinder, belt sander, palm sander)
Demonstrated safe work habits

Visual acuity with 70-degree peripheral perception
