Job Description

A Community Disaster Program Specialist will guide, lead and support teams of trained volunteers to deliver comfort and care during times of disaster. The position requires deploying to disaster relief operations outside the region at least once a year and maintaining continuous volunteer engagement through established processes and collaboration with volunteer services staff.

Job Overview

As a Community Disaster Program Specialist you will empower volunteers, support program implementation, build mission capacity, engage communities, manage operations in a matrixed environment, act as the local point of contact for partners, and respond to disasters in the region.

Key Responsibilities
  • Empower Volunteers:
    Facilitate and support a diverse volunteer team responsible for implementing volunteer‑led disaster cycle services programming and ensuring rapid, accessible, equitable delivery to frontline communities.
  • Support the Program:
    Assist with the successful implementation of specific disaster cycle services activities or functions within an assigned geographic area.
  • Mission Capacity Building:
    Engage disaster volunteers—representatives of the communities they serve—culturally and linguistically.
  • Engage Community:
    Support local efforts to prepare, mobilize communities and engage partners for disaster response and recovery.
  • Manage in a Matrix:
    Implement plans to meet assigned volunteer engagement targets and coordinate the volunteer‑led Disaster Action Team response to local incidents.
  • Know Your Communities:
    Act as the local point of contact, partnering with local organizations and leaders for community resiliency before, during, and after disasters.
  • Ready to Respond:
    Participate in regional disaster response operations after completing required training.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:

    Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Experience:

    Minimum 3 years of related experience.
  • Valid Driver’s License.

Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to coordinate staff and volunteer activities.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Proven record of collaboration with diverse groups and community representatives.
  • Interim proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to work outside regular duty hours, including nights and weekends.
Residency Requirements
  • Chapter‑based positions:
    Employees must work daily in their assigned geographic area to engage and mobilize communities and support volunteers.
  • Regional positions:
    Employees must work daily within their region’s geographic area to provide leadership, functional support, and community engagement.
Physical Requirements

Employees must regularly sit, use hands to handle or feel, talk or hear, reach with hands and arms, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, lift up to 15 pounds frequently and up to 30 pounds occasionally. Vision and noise tolerance as described above are required.
