Job Description
Summary:
The certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) works under the supervision of a physician anesthesiologist who is a member of the Medical Staff with privileges to provide anesthesia services. Except for emergencies, all anesthetic delivered is done so under the supervision of the attending anesthesiologist.
Responsibilities and Duties:- Assisting with the performance of and documenting a pre‑anesthetic assessment and evaluation of the patient including requesting consultations and diagnostic studies, selecting, obtaining, ordering and administering pre‑anesthetic medications and fluids, and obtaining informed consent for anesthesia.
- Assisting with development and implementation of an anesthetic care plan.
- Initiating, under the medical direction of the supervising anesthesiologist, the anesthetic technique which may include general, regional, local and sedation.
- Assisting with application and insertion of appropriate non‑invasive and invasive monitoring modalities for continuous evaluation of the patient’s physical status.
- Administration of the anesthetics, adjuvant and accessory drugs and fluids necessary to manage the anesthetic under the medical direction of the supervising anesthesiologist.
- Managing a patient’s airway and pulmonary function under the medical direction of the supervising anesthesiologist.
- Facilitating emergence and recovery from anesthesia by selecting, obtaining, ordering and administering medications, fluids and ventilator support under the medical direction of the supervising anesthesiologist.
- Assisting with post‑anesthesia care and providing post‑anesthesia follow‑up evaluation and care under the medical direction of the supervising anesthesiologist.
- Implementing acute and chronic pain management modalities under the medical direction of the supervising anesthesiologist.
- Assistance with response to emergencies by providing airway management, administration of emergency fluids and drugs and using basic or advanced cardiac life support techniques.
- Assistance with the initiation and management of regional anesthetics including labor epidurals under the medical direction of the supervising anesthesiologist.
- Assistance with data collection, reporting, committee meetings, compliance documentation and process oversight in quality and risk management issues as directed.
- Participation in and attendance at mandatory departmental and other CRNA staff meetings.
- Participation with departmental training and educational initiatives.
- Participation with other committees and interdepartmental activities as directed.
- Transfer of patient’s care to other qualified anesthesia providers in a manner that assures safety and continuity of care.
- Care is transferred to non‑anesthesia personnel such as post‑anesthesia care nursing or other intensive care units in a manner that assures continuity of care and transfer of all pertinent clinical information.
- Complete, accurate and timely documentation of all appropriate and pertinent information in the medical record.
- Complete and accurate documentation of all information necessary to insure accurate billing and compliance with established state and federal billing practices.
- Undertake precautions to minimize risk of infection to the patient, self and other healthcare providers.
- Adherence to all established safety precautions to minimize the risks of fire, explosion, equipment malfunction and electrical shock.
- Performance and documentation of all indicated machine and equipment checks to ensure equipment readiness, function, availability and cleanliness as indicated and in accordance with established departmental and hospital policies.
- Assistance with and ongoing assessment of patient positioning.
- Accountability; the manner of compensation shall be according to the mutual desires and rights of the contracting parties.
- The supervising physician is responsible for the quality and appropriateness of care provided by the CRNA.
- The CRNA will document all care in the chart as appropriate exams, procedures, progress notes, labor record, anesthesia record, etc.
