Registered Nurse; RN General, Dialysis, Mental Health

These duties are illustrative only. Employees may perform some or all of these duties or other job-related duties as assigned.

• Provide professional nursing care to individuals in a variety of settings, including student health services units, correctional facilities, juvenile facilities, or state-owned/operated institutions.

• Observe, assess, and document patient symptoms, reactions, and progress; conduct nursing rounds; take and record vital signs.

• Prepare and administer prescribed medications, treatments, and immunizations in accordance with physician orders and established care plans.

• Monitor restrained or isolated patients at required intervals (e.g., every 15 minutes) and provide immediate medical attention during emergencies, including first aid, CPR, arranging hospital transport, and notifying the physician as needed.

• Counsel patients regarding medical needs and referrals.

• When assigned, provide leadership support by scheduling, assigning, and reviewing work of lower-level staff (e.g., RNs, LPNs), approving leave, completing performance evaluations, and assisting with staff training, orientation, and development.

• In correctional medical centers, assume responsibility for the healthcare of 20–60 bedridden inmates, including:

  • Performing nursing rounds and evaluations

  • Developing and implementing care plans

  • Administering medications (including narcotics)

  • Providing all required direct nursing care

  • Performing specialized procedures such as IV therapy, wound care, oxygen therapy, dialysis, blood transfusions, tube feeding, catheterization, suctioning, phlebotomy, and CPR

• Organize and oversee “Code Blue” responses and direct assigned healthcare staff during emergencies.

• Act as lead worker for assigned shift in the absence of higher-level nursing staff.

• Assist physicians with diagnostic health evaluations as assigned.

• Accurately document medications, treatments, and medical information in patient records.

• Complete required reports, including incident and accident reports and Medicaid documentation.

• Order medical supplies and equipment; maintain accurate inventory and accountability for controlled substances.

• Coordinate outpatient appointments, physician examinations, and prescription orders with local pharmacies.

• Perform administrative duties, attend meetings, serve as liaison within the organization, and participate in or lead problem-solving teams.

• Serve as instructor or trainer when needed.

• Knowledge of professional registered nursing practices and procedures.

• Knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations, policies, and procedures.

• Skill in the operation of medical equipment (e.g., stethoscope, otoscope, blood pressure cuff, EKG machine).

• Ability to write clear, concise, and accurate reports.

• Ability to gather, organize, and analyze information.

• Ability to manage mostly concrete variables with some abstract problem-solving.

• Physical ability to meet job demands.

• Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Ohio, issued by the Ohio Board of Nursing in accordance with Section 4723.03 of the Ohio Revised Code.

• Biennial renewal of Registered Nurse licensure required.
