Administers first responder health services to students in Columbus City School (CCS) buildings in an effort to treat illnesses and minor injuries. Promotes, protects, maintains, and improves the health status of students through the cooperative efforts of the student, his/her family, the physician and dentist, the school, and the community.
Duties/Responsibilities- Promotes good health for the district's students. As a member of the educational team, the school nurse enhances students’ potential for attendance, class participation, and learning by identifying and addressing medical conditions that may impact the student's ability to achieve the district's performance standards.
- Determines the health status of students through health assessment, history, observation, parent conferences, and consultation.
- Performs appropriate referrals and follow-ups to community health care providers and agencies for physical and mental health concerns.
- Helps control communicable disease through assessment of students’ immunization status, and screening for communicable and nuisance diseases.
- Provides emergency care for illness and injury occurring at school.
- Manages chronic illness at school, such as asthma and diabetes.
- Provides health counseling and supports classroom health education curriculum.
- Acts as liaison on all health matters between the student, family, school staff, and community health agencies.
- Links families to an array of school-based and community health and social services.
- Provides care for students requiring specialized health care procedures during the school day.
- Promotes wellness activities for students, families and staff members. Performs other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing or a related field and eligibility for an ODE school nurse license.
- Registered Nurse with an Ohio Board of Nursing License required.
