Program OverviewThe Ohio State University James Cancer Hospital Nurse Residency Program offers unique opportunities for newly licensed graduate nurses to successfully transition from student to professional through a Full‑Time, structured, 14‑20 week paid orientation to the field of Oncology Nursing. The program incorporates Patricia Benner's theoretical model of novice to expert and facilitates socialization into the Medical Center through hands‑on clinical experience, in‑depth classroom learning, and ongoing professional and personal development.

The Staff Nurse functions as a member of a team of care providers cultivating collaboration, enthusiasm, and mutual respect. The team provides patient care and supportive services directed towards achievement of positive patient care outcomes, maximizing the patient’s involvement in his/her own plan of care, improving service levels, reducing the length of hospitalization, and decreasing costs. The Staff Nurse is responsible for managing and providing care to the patient and his/her family, directing and supervising nursing care provided by other members of the patient care team, assessing, prescribing, implementing, coordinating, delegating and evaluating the nursing care of patients, and prioritizing patient care needs while providing leadership and development of the patient care team.
Qualifications- Graduate from a CCNE (Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education) or ACEN (Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing) accredited nursing program required.
- Current licensure or interim permit in the practice of registered nursing from the State of Ohio Board of Nursing required.
- Previous experience in a relevant care setting preferred.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred.
