Job Description

Plans, directs & manages psychiatric/MR nursing services & programs; develops & implements nursing policies & procedures; coordinates nursing department quality assurance plan; monitors & ensures hospital compliance with external reviewers (e.g., Medicare/Medicaid, fire marshal); investigates all unusual problems involving patient care & ward/unit/program management; serves as consultant & liaison to subordinates & all other hospital clinical & administrative staff & with other resources (e.g., community agencies, local, state & federal agencies);

develops, writes & updates nursing services & program manuals; conducts rounds in all patient care areas to review patient care services. Under the administrative direction of the superintendent, as Nursing Program Director assists Medical Director with all administrative responsibilities and ensures quality control in overall nursing delivery within the center. Recommends and implements needed changes within the Health Services Dept for efficiency and productivity.

Supervises and evaluates nurses, completes performance evaluations; approves/disapproves leave requests. Assists in planning and coordinating nursing policies and procedures, participates in evaluation process of residents; remains informed of special orders concerning residents; observes nursing care and visits residents to ensure that nursing care is carried out as directed and that treatment is administered in accordance with physician orders. Assists physicians with resident physicals and examinations;

attends to medical needs of residents, directly or through delegation; serves as the center’s liaison with community-based medical providers for residents participating in all contracted medical services; ensures that resident appointments are made and kept as scheduled; contributes as a member of the interdisciplinary team who communicates to all nurses the medical needs discussed at these meetings; contributes on the center’s MUI committee.

Advises administration of budgetary and personnel needs; interviews and makes recommendations for hiring professional and non-professional Health Services staff; initiates disciplinary actions; develops and presents orientation and training programs for employees and individuals; monitors residents medical charts for nursing compliance. Assists in performing nursing duties as needed. Acts as Administrator On Call as assigned. Provides shift coverage as needed.
