2025 New Graduate Nurse Residency Program

The Ohio State University James Cancer Hospital Nurse Residency Program offers unique opportunities for newly licensed graduate nurses to successfully transition from student to professional through a full‑time, structured 14‑20 week paid orientation to the field of oncology nursing. The James Cancer Hospital is one of 40 National Cancer Institute‑designated comprehensive cancer centers and is home to pioneering cancer research, prevention and treatment within a dynamic university hospital setting.

Program

Focus

The residency program incorporates Patricia Benner’s theoretical model of novice to expert and facilitates socialization into the medical center through hands‑on clinical experience, in‑depth classroom learning, and ongoing professional and personal development. Each resident will be supported by a Nurse Residency Program Educator with advanced nursing education and experience in transitioning new nurses from students to professionals.

Responsibilities

The staff nurse functions as a member of a team of care providers cultivating collaboration, enthusiasm, and mutual respect. Responsibilities include managing and providing care to the patient and his or her family, directing and supervising other nursing staff, assessing, prescribing, implementing, coordinating, delegating and evaluating nursing care, and prioritizing patient care needs while providing leadership to the patient care team.

Eligibility

and Qualifications

Graduate from a CCNE or ACEN accredited nursing program; current licensure or interim permit in the practice of registered nursing from the State of Ohio Board of Nursing; previous experience in a relevant care setting preferred; bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred.

Final candidates are subject to successful completion of a background check. A drug screen or physical may be required during the post‑offer process.
