Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a PCU/Surgical Oncology position at an academic medical center in Ohio, requiring at least 2 years of current acute care experience and night shift availability.

Details
  • Mixed acuity PCU and Med/Surg unit specializing in Surgical Oncology at an academic cancer hospital
  • Patient population includes adults and geriatrics with surgical oncology diagnoses including breast, thyroid, melanoma, hepatobiliary (liver, pancreas, spleen, biliary tract, neuroendocrine), colorectal (colon, rectal), and plastics (reconstructive breast cancer or sarcoma)
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio goal is 1:4, with potential for 1:5 based on unit needs
  • Special procedures include chemotherapy administration, blood transfusions, IV antibiotics, management of oncologic emergencies, cytokine release syndrome, insulin drips, and heparin drips
  • Strong unit focus on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention
  • Charting is done in Epic (required)
  • Night shift, 3x12-hour shifts (19:00–07:30); rotating day/night contracts may be scheduled for days, nights, or a combination based on department needs
  • Shift assignments are reviewed every 4-week scheduling period and are subject to change based on staffing priorities
  • Weekend scheduling is variable based on unit needs; no set or blocked scheduling is offered
  • Travelers may be required to float within their scope of practice
Requirements
  • Active OH or Compact RN license required
  • Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
  • ONS Chemotherapy certification preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of current acute care experience required; experience must be active and consistent within the last 12 months and in the PCU/telemetry specialty
  • Oncology experience preferred but not required
  • Epic EMR experience required
  • Preferred skills include BiPAP/CPAP management, chest tube management (Emerson/Pleur Evac), and tracheostomy care
  • Core skills required include interpretation and management of dysrhythmias and telemetry monitoring
  • Experience in a PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown or MS/Tele setting required
  • Nursing degree from an ACEN or CCNE accredited program required
  • 2 professional references required: at least 1 from a manager, director, or formal leadership role; a Charge RN is acceptable as the second reference; coworker references are not accepted
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
Additional Information
  • All permanent staff on this unit are PCU trained, making it a high-acuity, fast-paced surgical floor
  • Ohio state law requires fingerprinting prior to starting; candidates must complete this process promptly after signing a contract — those outside Ohio but within driving distance must travel to an Ohio fingerprinting location, while those farther away will receive a fingerprinting packet by mail
  • RTO must be submitted at time of consideration and built into the contract, limited to 7 days or less
  • Former employees of the facility are eligible for a travel assignment after being away for 6 or more months; current employees of any Ohio State University hospital location are not eligible
  • Local candidates are accepted at the same rate as travelers
  • Multiple parking permit options are available for agency staff through the campus parking program
