A Research Scientist (1-year term, renewable annually based on funding availability) will conduct independent and collaborative research projects in the Kawasumi Lab at The Ohio State University, primarily on skin cancer biology and skin cancer epigenetics. The goal is to investigate genomic and epigenomic abnormalities in skin cancer and how to modulate DNA damage responses or epigenetic changes to inhibit skin cancer.

Under the direction of the PI (Dr. Masaoki Kawasumi), the Research Scientist will study UV-induced DNA damage responses, UV-mediated skin diseases (skin cancer and lupus), skin disease epigenetics, exosomes, and 3D skin models.

The goals are to elucidate molecular mechanisms by which cells sense UV-induced DNA lesions (CPD and 6-4PP) and activate processes such as ATR-Chk1 checkpoint signaling, DNA repair, mutagenic translesion synthesis, and epigenetic changes; and to dissect the molecular mechanisms by which genetic/epigenetic changes occur during cancer evolution, caffeine treatment, UV-induced DNA damage, and lupus development. Approaches include cell culture (primary cells and established cell lines), flow cytometry, DNA replication track analysis, Western blot, chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP), proteomics, next-generation sequencing and analysis, genome and epigenome editing, small-molecule screening, mouse genetic models, and patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models.

Responsibilities
  • Perform molecular and cellular assays, conduct mouse studies, and document research data.
  • Identify technical problems, propose solutions, and contribute to team science approaches.
  • Analyze next-generation sequencing data and perform bioinformatics and statistical analyses.
  • Engage in scientific writing and present data to various groups; maintain effective communication, including creating a mentoring compact and an Individual Development Plan.
  • Prioritize tasks, manage time and budget, and work in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Develop new collaborations with internal and external stakeholders and mentor junior lab members.
  • Train junior scientists in standardized techniques and instrumentation.
  • Contribute to preparation of oral/poster presentations, manuscripts, grant applications, progress reports, IRB and IACUC protocols.
  • Work independently and with the lab, Department of Dermatology, and OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center; assist PI with day-to-day mentoring and lab management.
  • Generate data for publications and help prepare for grant applications.
Qualifications
  • Minimum Qualifications: PhD in Biological Sciences or relevant field. Demonstrated ability as a competent and productive researcher with publications, presentations, and contributions to inventions, new designs, or techniques of significance.
