Summary

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Position

The Center for Suicide Prevention and Research at Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH) in Columbus, Ohio is seeking to hire a postdoctoral fellow with a desire to advance their training and skills in youth suicide prevention and mental health research. Applicants should have an interest in the epidemiology of youth suicide, the association between youth suicide and health service access and quality, health disparities, and suicide prevention interventions.

The specific position will focus on community-based research with an emphasis on high-risk vulnerable youth populations. Supervision and mentorship will be provided by Dr. Donna Ruch, PhD. The postdoctoral fellow will also have opportunities to collaborate with other faculty and research team members.

General Description

The overall goal of the fellowship is to support the individual in the transition to becoming an independent researcher. The candidate will have opportunities to conduct data analyses, contribute to publications, assist with the development of new projects and grant proposals, and pursue funding to support their own research interests. The fellow will receive training in manuscript development, grant-writing, health services research methods, quantitative and qualitative methods, and conducting clinical trials.

The postdoctoral fellowship is a 2-year, full-time appointment. Salary is commensurate with the National Institute of Health guidelines for postdoctoral fellows. Benefits are provided. The position is based at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

Essential Functions
  • Designs studies, develops study protocols, and conducts research under the guidance of a faculty mentor.
  • Records and analyzes data generated by the research study. Assists in the development of hypotheses for further investigation from the results of the studies performed.
  • Assists with the preparation of scientific and technical papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and presents findings at local and national research forums.
  • Collaborates with other ongoing research efforts either at NCH or other partnering institutions.
  • Works toward research independence, preparing to submit proposals to and obtain funding from external granting agencies.
Skills and Experience Required
  • Effective interpersonal skills required in interactions with scientists, physicians, and research colleagues.
  • Previous experience in relevant research areas
  • Strong quantitative analytic skills with familiarity in advanced statistical techniques (e.g. longitudinal analysis, survival analysis, multi-level modeling) and experience with statistical software packages: SAS, STATA, R, SPSS
  • Excellent writing skills as skills as evidenced by application materials, peer-reviewed publications
  • Previous grant writing experience is not required but a plus
Education Required
  • PhD, MD, or equivalent degree in behavioral or social science (e.g., psychology, social work, public health, epidemiology).
