Overview

The Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital seeks an outstanding faculty candidate for recruitment at the tenure‑track Associate or Full Professor rank in the Center for Childhood Cancer Research, with a research program focused on pediatric central nervous system tumors, to act as the Scientific Director of the Brain Tumor Program. The candidate will maintain appointment with the Ohio State University College of Medicine, lead and advance the program’s scientific mission by establishing an impactful, independently‑funded research program focused on the biological underpinnings of high‑risk pediatric CNS tumors.

The role includes conducting cutting‑edge, extramurally supported research, fostering collaborative basic and translational science, and training and mentoring the next generation of investigators.

Researchers will have access to colleagues and resources at both Nationwide Children’s and Ohio State campuses and will collaborate closely with clinical colleagues in Hematology, Oncology, and BMT. Candidates must have a PhD or MD/PhD (with up to 20% clinical effort for physician‑scientists) and must demonstrate a strong track record of extramural funding and high‑quality first‑ or senior‑author publications on CNS tumors.

Responsibilities
  • Design experiments and develop protocols necessary to conduct meaningful research in a specific scientific area.
  • Perform hands‑on techniques as needed to complete projects.
  • Ensure research projects are conducted efficiently, correctly, and in a timely manner.
  • Train subordinate research staff such as technicians, graduate students, post‑doctoral fellows, etc. to perform required techniques.
  • Record, collect, and analyze study data to reach valid conclusions.
  • Plan future research directions and studies based on results.
  • Prepare papers and publish results in appropriate scientific journals.
  • Present results and conclusions at weekly Center for Research Innovation meetings and at national conferences.
  • Collaborate with other research investigators at the Institute and Ohio State University.
  • Serve as a resource in a particular area of scientific expertise.
  • Provide mentorship to graduate students and post‑doctoral fellows in preparing them to be independent researchers.
  • Perform faculty duties as a member of the Ohio State University College of Medicine.
  • Prepare scientific proposals to seek external research funding whenever possible.
  • Prepare and monitor the capital budget for the area of responsibility and authorize expenditures from approved grant funds.
  • Recruit, hire, terminate, and train assigned staff and train staff for compliance with hospital policies, research institute requirements, NIH, NRC, AALAC, OSHA standards, and regulations.
  • Conduct training on animal care and use as appropriate.
