Research Scientist - Physiology & Cell Biology

The Research Scientist will establish and lead an independent, nationally competitive research program investigating cardiac arrhythmias within the Department of Physiology and Cell Biology. The role is primarily achieved through individual effort and direct accountability for setting the research direction. The scientist’s core responsibilities include:

• Securing significant salary and program funding by writing and submitting grant proposals as Principal Investigator, co‑investigator, or collaborator to extramural sponsors.
• Managing the full research lifecycle: developing and testing original hypotheses; planning, designing, and executing advanced research experiments.
• Developing and implementing new research techniques and methodologies.
• Conducting rigorous statistical analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of raw data.
• Serving as the primary author for manuscripts, abstracts, and research reports published in peer‑reviewed journals.
• Ensuring compliance with federal and institutional safety regulations (e.g., laboratory, radiation).
• Overseeing daily lab activities, including directing procurement, ensuring equipment maintenance, and developing new collaborative opportunities.
• Formally supervising and training junior research staff, post‑doctoral researchers, residents, and students.

Minimum Education & Experience

Required:

• Doctorate (Ph.D., M.D., or an equivalent terminal degree) in Biology, Molecular or Cellular Biology, Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Engineering, or a closely related field.
• Advanced expertise in the relevant area and experience leading independent research.
