ResponsibilitiesThe Research Scientist is responsible for establishing and leading an independent, nationally competitive research program investigating cardiac arrhythmias within the department of Physiology and Cell Biology. This specialized role is primarily achieved through individual effort and direct accountability for setting the research direction. The scientist's core responsibility is to secure significant salary and program funding by writing and submitting grant proposals of original research as Principal Investigator (PI), co‑investigator, or collaborator to extramural sponsors.
Duties encompass the full research lifecycle: developing and testing original hypotheses, planning, designing, and executing advanced research experiments; developing and implementing new research techniques and methodologies; conducting rigorous statistical analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of raw data; and serving as the primary author for manuscripts, abstracts, and research reports published in peer‑reviewed journals. Furthermore, the scientist is accountable for compliance with federal and institutional safety regulations (e.g., laboratory, radiation) and oversees the daily activities of the lab, including directing procurement, ensuring equipment maintenance, developing new collaborative opportunities, and formally supervising and training junior research staff, post‑doctoral researchers, residents, and students.
Doctorate (Ph.D., M.D., or an equivalent terminal degree) in Biology, Molecular or Cellular Biology, Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Engineering, or a closely related field.
