Postdoctoral Scholar to pursue specialized research training, education, and experience under the guidance of a scientific mentor in the Department of Neurology; plans, designs, and executes experiments of considerable scope and complexity in the assigned research laboratory; collects and analyzes data for research sponsored by appropriate agencies and institutions; identifies and selects problems to be studied; develops and troubleshoots new experimental techniques and protocols;

attends research seminars; contributes to manuscript preparation and supports technical writing; participates in preparation of grant applications for extramural funding; performs additional duties as assigned.

The Postdoctoral Scholar will conduct neuroimmunology research in the laboratory of Dr. Benjamin Segal on grant-funded projects focused on immune-mediated axon regeneration following traumatic central nervous system (CNS) injury. The successful candidate will independently conduct assigned research projects involving human tissue and fluid samples as well as mouse models. Responsibilities include animal tissue harvest and processing, flow cytometry and FACS sorting, neuronal, glial, and immune cell culture, nucleic acid extractions, ELISAs, bead-based microarrays, immunohistochemistry, spatial transcriptomics, and molecular analyses.

The candidate will summarize research data for inclusion in manuscripts, grant proposals, and progress reports; assist in preparing publications, posters, abstracts, and presentations; maintain accurate laboratory records; oversee laboratory operations and supplies; and assist with the training and mentorship of research staff and students. Experience with mouse models of sciatic nerve, optic nerve, and spinal cord injury and expertise in bioinformatics analysis of single-cell and bulk RNA sequencing datasets is preferred.

Minimum Education & Experience

Required:

To be considered for this Postdoctoral Scholar position, candidates must possess a Ph.D. in Neuroscience, Immunology, Neurobiology, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Sciences, or a closely related field. Applicants must demonstrate strong research, experimental design, data analysis, and statistical skills, as well as excellent written and verbal communication abilities. Experience in neuroimmunology, CNS injury research, molecular and cellular biology techniques, and animal models is preferred.

Successful candidates will have the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment while demonstrating independent scientific initiative and a strong commitment to research productivity, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and scholarly achievements. Requires successful completion of a background check; qualified candidates may be asked to complete a pre-employment physical, including a drug screen.
