Research Senior Technician

The Bruckerhoff Freshwater Community Ecology Lab is hiring a research senior technician to collect fish, habitat, and water quality data in Ohio streams and rivers and design and implement laboratory and field research projects.

This position requires extensive field sampling of fish and invertebrate communities using a variety of techniques, including backpack electrofishing, seining, PIT tagging, and boat electrofishing.

Responsibilities
  • Preparing and aging otoliths
  • Sample sorting and identification of fish and invertebrates
  • Designing and conducting laboratory experiments
  • Database management
  • Geospatial analysis
  • Independent data analysis and writing of reports and manuscript

The technician will be expected to perform statistical analysis, present findings to professional stakeholder audiences, and prepare final research reports for funding agencies and manuscripts to submit for peer-reviewed publication.

The technician will also be expected to train less experienced colleagues in the laboratory group and independently (without supervisor approval) anticipate, recognize, and solve routine issues associated with ecological research in the field and laboratory.

The technician will also need to independently problem solve to deal with infrequent or unusual issues that may arise. The research technician will be expected to work independently to solve problems based on established protocols and precedent established in the research group. Travel may be required to site locations. The individual must be able to lift 50 pounds and work outside in all weather conditions.

This position will require substantial time spent in or near water and handling aquatic organisms.

Minimum Education Required

Bachelor's Degree in Fisheries, Aquatic Ecology, Environmental Science, Biology, or related field or equivalent experience required; 4 years of relevant experience required with High School diploma or GED, 2 years of relevant experience required with Associate's Degree, or 0 years of relevant experience required with Bachelor's Degree.

Desired Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a Natural Resources-related field and experience using software like R, R Studio, Arc GIS, and the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience presenting scientific research to general and professional audiences in verbal and written forms, especially publications
  • Teaching/mentoring experience preferred for working with less experienced students and employees in the laboratory group
  • 2-3 years of relevant experience, including experience gained during a Master’s degree program
  • Relevant experience includes wildlife, fisheries, and general aquatic ecological sampling in streams, lakes, rivers, and reservoirs including electrofishing, seining, habitat characterization, and water quality sampling
  • Basic statistical and data management skills required through experience, coursework, or graduate work

Pay Range

The pay range for this job profile is $19.28 - $25.19. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications.
