Security & Safety Officer 1 (Part‑time)

The State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio (STRS Ohio) is seeking a Security & Safety Officer 1 to join its Safety Services Department.

Compensation: $20.67 per hour.

Work schedule:

Varies Sunday through Saturday; hours and shifts will vary.

• Patrol building and grounds on foot or using a golf‑cart type vehicle, including the computer room and Discovery Park on an hourly basis.
• Routinely check doors and windows to ensure they are secure.
• Conduct surveillance of buildings and grounds through closed‑circuit television (CCTV) and other electronic systems.
• Watch for and report irregularities and hazards, such as unlocked doors, property damage or leaking pipes.
• Document issues on the daily log, complete incident reports, and coordinate maintenance when needed.
• Sound alarms or respond to visual or auditory alarms as required.
• Consult with management for immediate attention; call police and fire departments when required.
• Ensure all associates and visitors exit safely in the event of a fire or other emergency requiring evacuation.
• Provide emergency first aid; call emergency services when required.
• Regulate vehicle and pedestrian traffic at entrances to maintain orderly flow.

• High‑school diploma or equivalent required.
• One year of experience in building security or safety, or completion of approved coursework in security and safety preferred.
• Knowledge of security alarm systems and surveillance cameras, fire alarm and fire‑extinguishing equipment, first aid (including CPR and AED), and key‑door control systems.
• Ability to learn and adapt to new technologies and life‑safety equipment such as fire panels, halon systems and fire sprinkler pumps.
• Ability to work with and preserve confidential information.
• Above‑average oral and written communication skills for difficult or dangerous situations.
• Interpersonal skills to work courteously with internal and external contacts.
• Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, climb stairs, lift and carry 20 pounds or more.
• Ability to climb stairs and assist in removing individuals during emergency evacuations.
• Organizational skills and a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and standard office equipment.
• Valid Ohio driver’s license and a safe driving record.
• Excellent attendance, punctuality, and flexibility to meet business needs (including occasional evenings, weekends, and non‑regular hours).
