Ohio State Department of Public Safety is hiring Security Officers—FOP (Fraternal Order of Police) to join the Central Campus Security Team. Security Officers focus on the safety of the university community as the top priority and provide physical security for various campus locations.
Duties and Responsibilities- 45% Patrol buildings and grounds to check on security conditions. Report on equipment malfunctions, fire and safety hazards, water leaks, and any other conditions requiring correction. Respond to alarms and provide customer service functions such as giving directions, providing escorts to nearby campus locations, and assisting disabled patrons.
- 35% Work in the security control center; monitor CCTV cameras; answer telephones; dispatch security officers; maintain radio contact and monitor fire and security alarms.
- 10% Perform a variety of safety and security duties including but not limited to: administering first aid, operating fire‑fighting equipment, and conducting safety, fire and security programs.
- 10% Investigate and report on crimes, unusual incidents, complaints, injuries, and incidents. Complete routine logs and forms. Perform other duties as assigned.
- Newly hired Security Officers receive specialized training, including First Aid/CPR/AED, OC Spray, mountain bike, and de‑escalation training.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and be subject to 24‑hour call‑in.
- Possession of a valid driver's license.
- Completion of field training program within the first three months of employment.
Starting pay $20.70 per hour. After successful completion of a 1‑year probationary period, hourly increases of $0.50 to $1.00 occur (depending on level). Shift differential includes $0.50 for 2nd and 3rd shift officers. Security officers are eligible for overtime and annual merit compensation increases. Uniforms and equipment are provided. Positions are considered essential, with presence required regardless of emergency conditions and absence potentially endangering the safety and wellbeing of the campus population and/or physical plant.
