Job Summary

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, advanced diagnostics, and complex repairs on a diverse fleet of heavy-duty diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and complex machinery. This role requires a high degree of technical expertise and the ability to work independently to troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve critical mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues, ensuring minimal downtime and maximum efficiency for fleet operations.

Job Responsibilities
  • Efficiently perform machinery maintenance and repairs in the field and/or shop. Majority of the Fleet is John Deere.
  • Diagnose and repair various construction equipment and on-highway utility trucks and trailers using basic and specialty test equipment, mechanical or electronic.
  • Troubleshoot and replace components such as valves, hoses, fittings, tanks, pumps in hydraulic systems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair complex wiring for systems such as utility booms, chassis, and engine wiring. Read and understand wiring schematics.
  • Perform basic fabrication and welding using MIG, ARC, OXY/Acetylene, torch, grinders, and other fabricating tools.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and DOT/FMCSA inspections, including wet and dry PM services and repairs identified during inspection findings.
  • Raise trucks, trailers or other equipment using hydraulic or air-assisted jacks or hoists in a safe practice.
  • Replace worn or defective brake components including tires.
  • Diagnose and repair air conditioning systems (A/C machine and test equipment provided by the company).
  • Complete and submit all paperwork accurately and on time.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and company policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required

Skills & Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED and minimum 5 years’ experience in this specific role or related fields (medium/heavy-duty truck repair, construction equipment repair, utility equipment repair).
  • Must be able to read, write and speak fluent English; bilingual Spanish is a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record; CDL preferred.
  • Ability to work independently, strong problem-solving skills, follow directions, and be self-motivated.
  • Professional representation of the company with honest, ethical, and diligent conduct.
  • Available/willing to work overtime as needed. Hours may include one weekend workday, to be discussed.
  • Knowledge and experience with diesel engines.
  • Basic computer skills and organizational ability.
  • Furnish own tools and work boots (specialized tools such as computer scanners provided by the company).
  • Field vs shop variation: most work at the primary location, with possible emergency field repairs; company provides safety equipment.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment under pressure and attention to detail; ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Professional demeanor and customer service skills.
  • Strong knowledge of methods, materials, tools and techniques used in repair of heavy construction equipment.
  • Ability to identify complex problems, review information, and implement solutions.
  • Proficient in operating vehicles and equipment used for diagnostic purposes.
  • Able to work effectively in a team environment.

  • Associates or Trade school degree in automotive or diesel repair.
  • ASE certifications;
    Air Conditioning 609 certification.
  • Welding certifications.
  • Qualified to perform DOT inspections.
