Function Statement

Under the general direction of the supervisor, performs renovation and restoration tasks to maintain the aesthetic components of the facilities interior and exterior. Modifies and installs drywall, doors, windows, ceilings and flooring; inspects and repairs fire rated walls and doors; and performs finishing tasks. Updates building drawings as necessary. Identifies, communicates, coordinates and completes projects and work performed in the assigned area(s).

Responds to emergency situations and evaluates and corrects defects. Leads team of facilities technicians. Mentors, trains and provides technical expertise to other staff. Distributes work orders. Assists other trades as needed; adheres to all safety practices and procedures; cleans and maintains work areas and equipment; attends meetings; properly completes documentation; provides a high level of customer service; communicates to customers, coworkers and supervision via written, electronic and verbal methods and devices;

Job Duties
  • Perform renovation and restoration tasks to maintain facility aesthetics.
  • Modify and install drywall, doors, windows, ceilings and flooring.
  • Inspect and repair fire rated walls and doors.
  • Perform finishing tasks and update building drawings.
  • Identify, communicate, coordinate and complete projects and work performed in the assigned area(s).
  • Respond to emergency situations and evaluate and correct defects.
  • Lead team of facilities technicians and mentor, train and provide technical expertise to other staff.
  • Distribute work orders and assist other trades as needed.
  • Adhere to all safety practices and procedures, clean and maintain work areas and equipment, attend meetings, properly complete documentation, and provide a high level of customer service.
  • Communicate to customers, coworkers and supervision via written, electronic and verbal methods and devices; operate department vehicles and perform other duties as assigned.
Technical Specialties
  • Carpentry:
    Fabricates, installs, repairs, and/or replaces cabinets, walls, doors, ceilings, countertops, masonry, fencing, windows, and sills. Perform minor roof repairs. Frame and modify doors. Install, repair and replace bathroom stalls. Install and repair cubicles.
  • Finishing:
    Install, repair and replace ceilings (grids, tile), handrails, molding (baseboard, chair rail), and casing; install and replace door stops, hardware, vents and panels; install, repair and replace window treatments, shelving, displays, audio-visual equipment, and signage; skim coat and sand walls and furniture; paint and stain walls and furniture; install and replace wall covering.
  • Fire-Stopping:
    Inspect fire-rated doors and walls; install intumescent materials and fire stop systems; interpret NFPA 101 and UL firestop codes and apply standards to the workplace.
  • Flooring:
    Install, repair, and replace flooring systems; repair subflooring; install, repair and replace stair treads and transition strips.
Other Departmental Duties
  • Provide technical support, ensure compliance with applicable codes, document regulatory compliance tests, and facilitate building walkthroughs.
  • Inspects and tests installations and repairs to ensure quality standards.
  • Become knowledgeable of equipment and utilities and transfer that knowledge to other staff.
  • Update building drawings and disable or enable local utility shut-offs.
  • Generate permits, troubleshoot and resolve field problems, participate in emergency response teams and project meetings, inventory assets, and develop preventive maintenance procedures.
  • Document labor, materials, and work performed on work orders; submit material and equipment purchase requests; create estimates for small projects; communicate and coordinate work performed in the assigned area; initiate work order escalation if needed.
  • Source parts and equipment, and participate in professional development and continuing education activities.
  • Interact with and assist other areas and staff within the department; participate in meetings, trainings, and orientations; participate on committees; perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Minimum Classification Requirements:
    High school diploma/GED or equivalent; four years’ experience in general construction, carpentry, fire-stopping, or painting; at least one year of experience equivalent to a senior level in the skilled trades series.
  • May require valid OSHA 30-hour General Industry Safety and Health card, valid state of Ohio driver license, and demonstrable competence in three of the following technical specialties: rough carpentry, finishing, fire-stopping, and flooring.
