Job Title: Facilities Mechanical Plumbing Technician

Department: University Hospital | Facilities Administration

Function Statement

Under the supervision of a senior technician or supervisor, performs tasks that ensure the uninterrupted operations of threaded, flanged, groove‑locked, soldered, and pressed plumbing systems and equipment. Inspects, tests, installs, fabricates, modifies, rigs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs plumbing systems and equipment. Tasks involve compressed gas systems, backflow prev enters, sump pumps, drain, waste and vent systems, specialty water systems (e.g., chlorine dioxide, de‑ionized water, reverse osmosis), domestic water systems and plumbing fixtures, heating hot water systems, and chilled water systems.

Responds to emergency situations, evaluates and corrects defects, assists other trades as needed, adheres to safety practices and procedures, cleans and maintains work areas, attends meetings, properly completes documentation, provides a high level of customer service, communicates via written, electronic and verbal methods, operates department vehicles, performs other duties as assigned, and actively supports the university’s commitment to integrity and professionalism.

Job Duties

Incumbents may perform some or all of the following duties and other job‑related duties as required.

Plumbing (70%)
  • Review blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Install, repair, and replace threaded, flanged, groove‑locked, soldered, and pressed piping and components.
  • Measure and cut pipes using hand and power tools.
  • Inspect and identify leaks.
  • Install and repair domestic water systems.
  • Install and repair drain, vent, and waste systems.
  • Install and repair specialty water systems (e.g., chlorine dioxide, de‑ionized water, reverse osmosis).
  • Install, certify, repair, and perform preventative maintenance on backflow prev enters.
  • Install and replace plumbing equipment and fixtures (e.g., meters, valves, toilets).
  • Assemble and disassemble plumbing fixtures.
  • Repair compressed gas systems.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve plumbing system issues (e.g., pressure, temperature, leaks).
  • Perform plumbing and pipe fitting preventive maintenance.
  • Address customer queries.
  • Clean the work area after completion.
General Duties (30%)
  • Technical Support:
    Ensure areas comply with applicable codes, document regulatory compliance tests, become knowledgeable of equipment and utilities, troubleshoot and resolve field problems, assist lower‑level technicians, locate, identify, disable and enable local utility shut‑offs, update building drawings, and participate on emergency response teams.
  • Communication / Record Keeping:
    Document labor, materials and work performed on work orders, request equipment and materials, inform customers when tasks are completed, initiate work order escalation if needed, and update building drawings.
  • Other Department Duties:
    Participate in professional development and continuing education activities, attend meetings, trainings, and orientations, inter‑act with and assist other areas and staff within the department, possibly participate on committees, and perform other duties as assigned.
Major Work Characteristics
  • Read, understand and update blueprints, schematics and as‑built drawings.
  • Read, understand and apply safety standards and practices (e.g., hazard communication, infection prevention, lock‑out/tag‑out).
  • Read, interpret and apply technical manuals and system specifications.

  • Learn technical skills and apply new knowledge to solve problems.
  • Select and use hand, power and machine tools.
  • Establish and maintain interpersonal relationships.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Perform basic math calculations (whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, algebra, geometry, trigonometry).
  • Apply engineering principles, load calculations, and accepted techniques for lifting and moving heavy objects.
  • Locate, disable and enable electrical and plumbing shut‑offs.
  • Instruct others in performing tasks.
  • Provide guidance and expert advice about technical systems or processes.
