Facilities Mechanical Steamfitter Technician

Function Statement

Under the supervision of a senior technician or supervisor, performs tasks that ensure the uninterrupted operations of mechanical systems and equipment. Inspects, tests, installs, fabricates, modifies, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs all welded piping systems and equipment, including boilers, compressed gas systems, steam & condensate systems, air compressors, laboratory and industrial kitchen equipment, steam stations, heat exchangers, condenser water, condensate, chilled water and heating hot water.

Responds to emergency situations and evaluates and corrects defects.

Job Duties

Incumbents may perform some or all of these duties and other job-related duties as required.

Pipe fitting and welding (70%)
  • Installs and repairs and maintains all welded piping systems and components.
  • Reviews blueprints and technical drawings, installs, repairs, and replaces piping and components.
  • Measures and cuts pipes using hand and power tools.
  • Inspects and identifies leaks.
  • Installs, certifies, repairs, replaces and performs preventative maintenance on piping systems and equipment (e.g., meters, valves, piping).
  • Troubleshoots and resolves piping system issues (e.g., pressure, temperature, leaks).
  • Performs preventive maintenance tasks.
  • Performs equipment installations (e.g., fans, pumps, heat exchangers, trapping stations, valving, and welded piping systems).
  • Addresses customer queries and cleans the work area after work completion.
General Duties (30%) Technical Support
  • Ensure areas are in compliance with applicable codes.
  • Document regulatory compliance tests.
  • Inspect and test installations and repairs to ensure they meet quality standards.
  • Become knowledgeable of equipment and utilities and transfer that knowledge to other staff.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve field problems.
  • Assist lower-level technicians.
  • Locate, identify, disable and enable local utility shut-offs.
  • Update building drawings.
  • Participate on emergency response teams.
Communication / Record Keeping
  • Document labor, materials and work performed on work orders.
  • Submit material and equipment purchase requests.
  • Provide feedback on materials.
  • Create estimates for small projects.
  • Inform customers when tasks are completed.
  • Communicate and initiate work order escalation, if needed.
Other Department Duties
  • Participate in professional development/continuing education activities for required certifications and soft skills.
  • Participate in meetings, trainings, and orientations.
  • Participate on emergency response teams.
  • Interact with and assist other areas and staff within the department.
  • May participate on committees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
