PositionDescription
This position constructs and repairs building frameworks as well as structures. Typical onsite tasks include stairways, door frames, partitions, rafters, cabinetry, siding, and drywall. Carpenters must have a strong understanding of wood and metal properties, pay great attention to project detail, and often perform labor‑level support activities. This is a safety‑sensitive role.
Responsibilities• Construct and repair building frameworks and structural components.
• Perform carpentry tasks such as installing door frames, floor, roof, and wall assemblies.
• Assist with assembling and removing concrete forms for concrete installations.
• Ensure floors, roofs, and drywall are leveled and aligned.
• Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and sketches to meet project requirements.
• Measure, cut, shape, and smooth materials according to specifications.
• Handle, transport, and set door frames and building materials.
• Load, unload, identify, and distribute building materials, machinery, and tools.
• Shadow experienced crew members to build knowledge and skills.
• Assist with area housekeeping and maintain a safe work environment.
• Communicate jobsite hazards and secure the site at the end of each day.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Follow safe work practices per the Hensel Phelps safety and health program.
- Take initiative and ask questions.
- Pay keen attention to detail and follow instructions.
- Provide own safety footwear.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with co‑workers and stakeholders.
- Strong mathematical reasoning and quantitative skills.
- Reliability and punctuality, including reliable transportation and consistent attendance.
- Experience with construction layout, blueprint reading, and shop drawing interpretation.
- Assistance with concrete forms, window‑frames, doors, staircases, millwork, trim, siding, drywall, and overall building frames.
- Ensuring floor, roof, and drywall layout is leveled and compatible.
- Proficient in measuring, cutting, shaping, and customizing materials.
- Load and unload construction materials and manage distribution of equipment and tools.
- Experience in job shadowing and skill progression.
- Housekeeping on construction sites.
- Promote a safe work environment and communicate hazards.
• Heavy work: up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, 20 pounds constantly.
• Frequent walking, kneeling, sitting, crouching, reaching, stooping, reading, speaking, pushing, pulling, lifting, standing, and typing.
• Walking and frequent movement around the jobsite.
• Occasional computer or tablet use, such as calculator or phone.
• Frequent communication with employees and external stakeholders regarding office and field administration.
• Constantly reads written communications and views mail; reads blueprints, load charts, and field measurements.
• Climbing ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps at various heights.
• Working from heights for extended periods.
• Balancing, stooping, and reaching as required.
• Grasping and applying pressure to objects regularly.
• Visual acuity required; operate a vehicle if necessary.
• Exposed to high and low temperatures and noisy outdoor environments.
• Long use of jackhammers, pavement breakers, wheelbarrows, and brooms.
• Repetitive use of hands and wrists with power, rotary, and vibration tools.
• Tolerate exposure to dusts and chemicals such as cement dust, solvents, and curing compounds.
• Wear a respirator and pass medical and fit testing.
