Position Overview

Work with members of the construction team to ensure smooth operations of daily paving on each job. Perform wide responsibilities associated with laying down asphalt. Multiple experienced asphalt crew members are required. Candidates should have a class A or B CDL and/or screeder experience in the asphalt industry. Must be willing to travel, work flexible hours, and join the laborer's union immediately.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
  • Assist paving crew with various duties such as shovel, rake, luting, running wheelbarrow and safely backing / dumping trucks into the paver.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties including equipment maintenance and assisting foreperson and/or crew members as needed.
  • Follow directions.
  • Perform daily maintenance of equipment, including inspecting for physical damage, checking loose or missing parts, inspecting fluid levels, inspecting for leaks, greasing machine daily, and inspecting tires / tracks.
  • Complete all company-required paperwork in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Ensure that tow arms, screed, and flow gates are adjusted properly to maintain appropriate head of material, angle of attack, and depth of mix in augers.
  • Be aware of distance from plant and number of trucks on haul to pace the paver accordingly, ensuring continuous operation.
  • Operate the paver efficiently, managing hopper, straight line paving, ensuring proper dumping and material placement.
  • Maintain complete command of the machine and surrounding operations at all times.
  • Communicate with operator to avoid stop-and-go paving and ensure smooth transitions.
  • Keep equipment clean and wipe down the equipment to promote a positive public image and enable close inspection.

  • Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times.
  • Be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Report to the assigned job site ready to begin work at the designated start time.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Manual of Safety Practices and Procedures.
  • Strict adherence to Shelly Company policies and procedures as outlined in the Company Book of Policies.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
  • Timely and regular attendance is expected of all Shelly Company employees.
Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • CDL: A Class A CDL with Tanker and Hazmat endorsement is preferred.
  • Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED, or one to three months related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Personal Protective Equipment: Wear PPE as required by OSHA and/or MSHA, including welding gloves, hard hat, hearing protection, safety shoes, seatbelt and harnesses when required.
  • Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, and effectively present information to customers, clients, and other employees.
  • Mathematical Skills: Perform basic mathematical skills.
  • Reasoning Ability: Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form and solve problems with several variables in standardized situations.
Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to bend, kneel, push, pull, squat, climb, stand, walk, sit, reach, drive, use fine motor skills and perform repetitive motion. Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with assistance. Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

Work is performed near moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions, regularly exposed to wet, humid airborne particles, extreme heat or cold, and vibration. Noise level is usually loud and may require protective equipment.
