Position Overview
Work with members of the construction team to ensure smooth operations of daily paving on each job. Performs wide responsibilities associated with lay down of asphalt. The Shelly Company needs multiple Experienced Asphalt Crew Members. Ideally, the selected candidates would have a class A or B CDL and/or screed experience in the asphalt industry. Candidates must be willing to travel, work flexible and varied hours, and join the laborer's union immediately
.
- Assist paving crew with various duties such as shovel and raking, luting, running a wheelbarrow, and safely backing or dumping trucks into the paver.
- Other miscellaneous duties include but are not limited to equipment maintenance and assisting the foreperson and/or crew members as needed.
- Follow directions.
- Perform daily maintenance of equipment:
- Inspect the machine for physical damage (cracking, bending, or deformation of plates or welds).
- Check for loose, broken, or missing parts such as screed attachments, extensions, nuts, and bolts.
- Check levels of all fluids—brake, fuel, transmission, power steering, engine coolant, hydraulic system, etc.
- Inspect various systems for leaks.
- Inspect plugs, filler caps, and fittings for signs of leaking.
- Inspect tires/tracks for cuts, bulges, irregularities, and excessive wear; ensure proper inflation.
- Grease the machine daily.
- Complete all company‑required paperwork in a timely and accurate manner.
- Ensure tow arms, screed, and flow gates are adjusted properly to maintain appropriate material head, angle of attack, and depth of mix in the augers.
- Be aware of distance from the plant and the number of trucks on haul to pace the paver, ensuring continuous operation.
- Operate the paver efficiently, including hopper management, straight‑line paving, and proper material handling.
- Maintain complete command of the machine and surrounding operations at all times.
- Communicate with the operator to avoid stop‑and‑go paving and ensure smooth transitions at stopping points.
- Keep equipment clean; wiping down equipment promotes a positive public image and facilitates close‑range inspection.
- Display a professional and courteous attitude toward co‑workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times.
- Be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
- Be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
- Report to the assigned job site ready to begin work at the designated start time.
- Strictly adhere to safety requirements and procedures outlined in the Manual of Safety Practices and Procedures.
- Strictly adhere to Shelly Company policies and procedures outlined in the Company Book of Policies.
- Work willingly in a team environment and assist co‑workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
- Maintain timely and regular attendance; employees will be held accountable for adhering to their workplace schedule.
Education and Experience
:
Less than or equal to a high school diploma or GED; or one to three months related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Personal Protective Equipment
:
Required to wear PPE in designated operations and production areas as defined by OSHA and/or MSHA. Equipment may include welding gloves, hard hat, hearing protection, safety shoes (hard‑toe), seatbelt, and harnesses when required.
Language Skills
:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees.
Mathematical Skills
:
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
Reasoning Ability
:
Ability to apply common‑sense understanding to carry out instructions and resolve problems involving several variables in standardized situations.
