Position: Facility Maintenance Specialist 1

Responsibilities

Completes basic preventative maintenance and repairs on building systems, including: installs and replaces lighting fixtures, light bulbs, ballasts, switches, receptacles and fuses; performs basic wiring of single- and three-phase motors; installs and repairs plumbing fixtures such as sewer lines, toilets, valves, sinks, radiators; cuts, soldering, threading of pipes; unclogs drains and toilets; greases motors; turns on water; drills or chisels holes in walls;

assists higher-level workers in advanced maintenance tasks; cleans work areas; operates boilers and related equipment; performs minor repairs and routine preventative maintenance to HVAC and mechanical room equipment such as changing belts, fluids, filters and lubricating equipment; assists in repair of HVAC equipment. Additionally, performs and/or assists in maintenance of wood products, cabinets, shelving, picture frames, wall plaques, signs, windows and doors, partitions, furniture;

building repairs such as erecting walls, plastering, pouring and finishing concrete, installing and finishing drywall surfaces, setting up and dismantling display exhibits; shop support duties like cleaning and oiling tools, sweeping floors, stocking supplies and inventory, erecting machinery and repairing equipment; miscellaneous duties such as operating snow and ice removal equipment, grounds-keeping equipment, farm tractor, backhoe, forklift and boom equipment;

installing, re-keying and programming locks and electronic door-entry systems; operating a personal computer to verify data and produce records; completing written work orders; independently making decisions on efficient repair and maintenance; assisting in the set-up, maintenance, clean-up and removal of events and serving as maintenance worker on-duty during events as scheduled. Works indoors and outdoors, exposed to dirt, dust, grease, unpleasant weather, loud noises, hot and confined work areas, high voltage;

may be exposed to burns, cuts, bruises and electrical shock; may work on scaffolding or extended ladder; may be required to travel overnight and work varied hours, including overtime and after-hours call-back situations.

Qualifications
  • Completion of post-secondary training in facilities maintenance technology, industrial trades technology or a comparable training program after hiring.
  • One year of experience in construction/​building maintenance that included carpentry, electrical, plumbing and HVAC.
