Definition: This job posting is for a Provisional position and will create a new list. The hiring department will conduct a preliminary review of your application to determine who to interview. Under immediate supervision, is responsible for assisting fully-skilled technicians in the installation, maintenance, replacement, and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment and control units; performs related duties as required.

Provisional Appointment

  • Currently there is not an active tested eligible list for this classification, therefore, this position will be filled on a PROVISIONAL basis. At such time an examination is given for this position, within two years of hire, the preferred candidate serving in the position provisionally will be required to take the examination. The preferred candidate at that time must pass the exam to continue employment in this position.

Examples Of Work

  • Assists HVAC Technicians in the preparation of work areas.
  • Assists HVAC Technicians in troubleshooting problems with heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
  • Assists HVAC Technicians in installing and repairing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment and preventative maintenance parts.
  • Operates hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment to assist in the repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment.
  • Operates a computer to control building automation systems and keep records.
  • Learns to read blueprints and schematics.
  • Cleans up work area after job is complete.
  • Operates a motor vehicle to reach work sites and supply centers.

Minimum Qualifications: Completion of the twelfth school grade and one (1) year of experience performing basic repairs and maintenance to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment. Substitution(s):
Possession of a certificate from a recognized vocational heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) program may be substituted for the required experience. A certificate of high school equivalence (GED) will be accepted in lieu of the twelfth school grade requirement. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license. (must attach copy before submitting application. Applications submitted without this document will be rejected).

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities: General knowledge of the safety procedures and practices used when working with heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems; some knowledge of the theory of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems; some knowledge of the techniques used to install, repair, and maintain heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment; ability to identify and use various tools of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning trade;

ability to climb step and extension ladders and remain stable; ability to perform tasks at various heights off the ground; ability to read and understand written instructions; ability to understand and follow oral instructions; ability to communicate orally and in writing; ability to operate a motor vehicle; ability to identify and distinguish between colors; ability to lift, carry, push, and pull at least fifty (50) pounds;

ability to develop and maintain effective working relationship with others; ability to operate a computer and related software; ability to maintain simple records.
