Under the general direction of a supervisor, performs complex tasks that ensure the uninterrupted operation of automated, electrical, and electronic systems and equipment. Inspects, tests, modifies, programs, and repairs these systems. Performs advanced troubleshooting and responds to emergency situations, evaluating and correcting defects. Identifies, communicates, coordinates, and completes projects in the assigned area(s). Leads a team of facilities technicians, mentors, trains, and provides technical expertise to other staff.

Distributes work orders in supervisor’s absence and assists other trades as needed. Adheres to all safety practices and procedures. Provides a high level of customer service and maintains accurate documentation. Operates department vehicle. Performs additional duties as assigned. Supports the university’s commitment to integrity and professional workplace culture. Shift, hours, days, and/or location may change based on operational need; overtime, 24‑hour emergency call may be required.

Technical Specialties (Perform 55% of duties in any three of five)
  • Branch Circuitry: Installs and reroutes electrical raceway; analyzes local outages; installs, repairs, replaces branch circuits and components (circuitry, lighting, ballasts, receptacles, switches, outlets); upgrades lighting systems; updates panel legends; reviews building drawings; troubleshoots circuits; performs preventive maintenance; advanced troubleshooting; repairs electronics.
  • Electronic Systems: Installs, repairs, replaces nurse call components; other electronic systems (automated lighting, televisions, master clock, public address, safety/security); pneumatic electronic components; motors and gears; automated systems; performs PMs; advanced troubleshooting.
  • Electrical Distribution Systems: Installs, repairs/replaces energized components (motor controls, transformers, switchgears, generators, panels); variable‑frequency drives; work on de‑energized systems; root‑cause analysis of distribution system.
  • Pneumatic Transport Systems: Installs, repairs/replaces pneumatic tube components (slide gates, stations, dispatchers, boards, motor drives); repairs waste‑flow components (display, door magnet, control valves, detectors, filters, monitors).
  • Fire Alarm Systems: Responds to alerts; disables, enables, replaces components (detectors, bells, strobes); installs, repairs, replaces smoke evacuation systems; updates server applications.
Mentorship Activities (20%)
  • Leads team of technicians.
  • Mentors and trains technicians.
  • Facilitates on‑the‑job training.
  • Coordinated work and leads projects.
General Duties (25%)
  • Ensures compliance with applicable codes and documents compliance tests.
  • Facilitates building walk‑throughs with stakeholders.
  • Inspects and tests installations and repairs for quality standards.
  • Acquires knowledge of equipment and utilities; shares knowledge.
  • Updates building drawings; locates, disables, and enables utility shut‑offs.
  • Generates permits (above ceiling, burn, penetration).
  • Troubleshoots and resolves field problems; participates in emergency response teams.
Communication and Recordkeeping
  • Documents labor, materials, and work performed.
  • Submits material and equipment purchase requests.
  • Provides feedback on materials and creates estimates for small projects.
  • Informs customers when tasks are completed; escalates work orders if needed.
Additional Departmental Duties
  • Participates in professional development and continuing education activities.
  • Assists other areas and staff within the department; attends meetings, trainings, and orientations.
  • May participate on committees and performs other duties as assigned.
