Job Overview
Dockworker position at Old Dominion Freight Line, responsible for safe and efficient loading and unloading of freight, supporting warehouse and material handling operations.
Primary Responsibilities- Load and unload freight on trailers using motorized forklift, pallet jack or manual methods, complying with DOT guidelines.
- Use multiple loading techniques such as tight or cross loading; transport freight across the service center.
- Utilize the Dock Yard Management System to monitor freight shipment locations.
- Read and interpret shipping labels and related shipment documentation (shipping orders, city stripping manifests, freight bills, overage/damage reports, exception forms).
- Rewrap, stack, or hand‑load freight as necessary; ensure quality loading of all trailers.
- Secure freight inside trailers using pallets, straps, rope, and other supplies.
- Maintain frequent contact with service center personnel in a fast‑paced, deadline‑oriented environment.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Working knowledge of safe and efficient lifting and transporting procedures, including freight transportation processes.
- Proficiency with various loading techniques, such as tight and cross loading.
- Experience completing freight movement forms (shipping orders, city stripping manifests, freight bills, overage/damage movement reports, exception forms).
- Ability to operate the dock yard management system to monitor shipment locations.
- Availability to work at all times to meet customer pickup and delivery schedules.
- Capable of operating handheld tablets when needed.
- Stand for up to 8 hours per shift on non‑forgiving surfaces, walk up to 8 hours, bend, stoop, kneel frequently.
- Lift and carry objects up to 100 lbs., handle freight weighing up to 500 lbs., operate forklifts, and load/unload full trailers.
- Work in hot or cold climates, loud or low light environments, and potentially wet or slippery conditions.
- Support safe forklift inspections and operations.
Exposure to various conditions including enclosed vehicles, trailer loading areas, all‑weather environments, fluctuating noise levels, and varying lighting. Responsibilities may include additional duties as required by management.
Compensation$27.50 – $33.05 per hour (actual compensation may vary based on location, experience, market conditions).
