Title: Bus Mechanic – Transportation

Job Status: FLSA Overtime Eligible

Reports To: Coordinator of Transportation

Department: Business Operations

Position Summary

To keep the district's buses and fleet vehicles in an operating condition that ensures they are safe to transport students and present no problems or interruptions to the educational program.

Job Qualifications
  • A high school diploma or equivalent training and experience.
  • ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification in Medium/Heavy Truck, School Bus, Transit, Automotive, or Brakes.
  • Cummins certification preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical specifications for school bus parts and related equipment.
  • International and Freightliner experience preferred.
  • Ohio Class B CDL with SP endorsement preferred, or the ability to obtain it if not currently held.
  • At least 3 years of verifiable employment in motor vehicle maintenance.
  • Excellent communication skills and professionalism.
  • Well‑dressed, neat and clean appearance.
  • Physically qualified under Rule 3301‑83‑07 of the Ohio Administrative Code.
  • Other qualifications acceptable per Board of Education approval.
Essential Duties
  • Diagnose equipment problems and perform necessary repairs on district vehicles.
  • Maintain vehicle service records using current fleet maintenance software.
  • Perform regular maintenance following the preventive maintenance schedule.
  • Repair, overhaul, maintain, and service diesel/alternative fuels powered buses and transportation fleet vehicles and equipment.
  • Investigate, address, and prioritize complex issues to determine course of action and solve service‑related problems.
  • Present information to individuals and small groups of coworkers.
  • Review maintenance support applications daily for exceptions and report findings to the department head regarding fluid usage and tire pressure readings from Continental yard readers.
  • Perform diagnostic tests for routine maintenance procedures and determine a course of action for damaged parts and systems.
  • Repair malfunctioning components, retrofit engines, change brakes, adjust steering systems, replace worn parts, and change hydraulic fluids.
  • Use computerized equipment along with welding torches, pneumatic wrenches, hydraulic jacks, screwdrivers, pliers, mallets, precision gauges and other applicable equipment.
  • Ensure student safety.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative professional relationships.
  • Remain free of alcohol or nonprescription controlled substances and avoid prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout employment.
  • Exhibit professional behavior, emotional stability, and sound judgment.
  • Serve as a role model for students in conduct as citizens and responsible, intelligent beings.
  • Help students develop ethical principles and democratic values.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the superintendent or designee.
Terms of Employment

261 days per year (251 work days and 10 paid holidays); 8 hours per day, excluding lunch. Vacation, holidays, and salary determined by negotiated agreement. Work year established by the Board.

Salary

Starting hourly rate: $25.43/hr – $29.44/hr.
