Position SummaryThe Medical Assistant – Commack supports physicians, advanced practice clinicians, and nurses by providing both patient care and administrative assistance. Responsibilities include validating patient identifiers, preparing patients and rooms, recording vital signs, drawing lab samples, scheduling appointments, answering phone calls, and entering data into the electronic medical record.
Job Responsibilities- Escort patients to exam rooms
- Cleans and stocks exam rooms
- Measures and records patient vital signs
- Obtains and processes blood samples as per NYULH policy
- Supports quality initiatives by following FGP guidelines for collecting and documenting information in the EMR
- Promotes a positive patient experience
- Communicates effectively with providers and administrative staff, and escalates issues
- Answers phone calls
- Reviews and responds to inbox messages
- Follows up on prescription refill requests
- Assists physicians with patient intake and transcribes visits into EPIC
- Performs other duties as needed
- Completes necessary intake which includes obtaining patient vital signs and other tests within defined scope of practice
- Validates patient medical record when accessing and updating information
- Assists with maintaining patient flow to and from exam rooms and treatment areas
- Ensures exam rooms and treatment areas are cleaned per infection control standards after each patient
- Communicates the functionality and purpose of MyChart to patients during intake
- Ensures translation services or equipment are in place prior to the start of the visit
- Collects blood or specimens and ensures proper handling and processing per organizational policy
- Performs point-of-care testing such as EKG, glucose testing, pregnancy test, and urinalysis
- Prepares the patient encounter ensuring all relevant information is up-to-date
- Reviews and imports relevant information prior to provider encounter
- Works with the clinical team to ensure logbooks related to equipment and specimen collection are followed per FGP standards
- Supports best practice workflows for MIPS by updating medical records with vital signs and histories
- Maintains patient privacy as it relates to HIPAA standards
- Handles patient calls and documents outcomes
- Refs clinical questions to RN/provider when appropriate
- Manages inbox messages and performs related tasks
- Updates patient records using EPIC functionality and maintains communication with peers and supervisors
- Assists physicians with procedure set-up
- Stocks exam/treatment rooms and supply closets with medical supplies, linen, and equipment
- Cleans and sterilizes designated equipment after use
- Supports FGP Clinical Quality Management by documenting and maintaining clinical supplies and equipment
- Reviews downtime procedures related to patient visits
- Completes annual competencies such as fire safety, hazardous waste, Med Sled, HIPAA compliance
- Partners with administrative and clinical personnel to complete prior authorization, medication refills, and referrals
- Assists with prescription refill requests and tasks RN/LPN/provider for renewal
- Accompanies physicians into exam room and transcribes patient history and exam findings, and documents physician encounter
- Lists diagnoses and symptoms and provides follow‑up instructions and prescriptions
- Documents patient orders including laboratory, radiology, and medication orders
- Performs other duties as assigned
