Position SummaryMedical Assistant, FGP – Endocrinology/Colorectal Surgery – Huntington. The Medical Assistant assists physicians, advanced care practitioners, and nurses in patient care, validates patient identifiers, prepares patients and rooms for examination, measures vital signs, draws blood, collects lab samples, schedules appointments, answers phone calls, and performs data entry.
Job Responsibilities- Escort patients to exam rooms.
- Clean and restock exam rooms.
- Measure and record patient vital signs.
- Obtain and process blood samples per NYULH policy.
- Support quality initiatives by following FGP guidelines for collecting and documenting information in the EMR.
- Promote a positive patient experience.
- Communicate effectively with providers and administrative staff, escalating issues as needed.
- Answer phone calls.
- Review and respond to in‑basket messages.
- Follow up on Rx refill requests.
- Assist physician with patient intake and transcribe visits into EPIC.
- Perform other duties as needed.
- Complete necessary intake including obtaining patient vital signs and other tests within defined scope of practice.
- Follow guidelines for validating patient medical record when accessing and updating information, including patient name and date of birth.
- Assist with maintaining patient flow to and from exam rooms and treatment areas; escort patients and specimens throughout the facility.
- Ensure exam rooms and treatment areas are cleaned per infection control standards after each patient.
- Communicate the functionality and purpose of MyChart to patients during intake.
- Ensure appropriate translation services or equipment is in place prior to the start of the visit.
- Assist with blood/specimen collection and ensure proper handling and processing per organizational policy & procedure.
- Perform point‑of‑care testing such as EKG, glucose testing, pregnancy test, urinalysis, following organizational policy & procedure, with documentation of required competency.
- Prepare the encounter ensuring all relevant information for the visit is up‑to‑date (bloodwork, radiology images, medications, past medical history).
- Review and import any “Prepare for your Visit”, “Outside Information” and patient history prior to provider encounter.
- Work with the clinical team to ensure logbooks related to equipment, specimen collection and other clinical safety measures are followed per FGP standards.
- Support best‑practice workflows for MIPS by updating medical records with patient vital signs and histories (immunization, medical & surgical). Scan and/or upload diagnostic reports and link them to associated orders in Epic.
- Maintain patient privacy as it relates to HIPAA standards.
- Handle patient calls and document outcomes of all patient communications as needed; refer clinical questions/concerns to RN/Provider.
- Assist with in‑basket message management and related tasks for patient medical advice requests.
- Utilize EPIC functionality to review and update patient records and maintain communication with peers and supervisors related to patient care.
- Assist physicians with procedure and/or setup according to the specialty when necessary.
- Stock exam/treatment rooms and/or supply closets with necessary medical supplies, linen, and equipment; communicate when supplies need to be replenished.
- Clean and sterilize designated equipment after use following policy & guidelines, documenting required competency.
- Support FGP clinical quality management by facilitating documentation and maintenance of clinical supplies and equipment.
- Review appropriate downtime procedures as it relates to patient visit.
- Complete annual competencies such as fire safety, hazardous waste, med‑sled, HIPAA compliance, etc.
