Position Summary

While performing the duties of an Athletic Trainer in the school districts contracted with St. Charles Hospital, the athletic trainer acts within their scope of practice to provide assessment, treatment, first aid, and emergency care to the student athletes as defined in the Athletic Training Services Standing Orders and under the administrative oversight of the Medical Director. In the clinic, the outpatient athletic trainer works under the direct supervision of physical and occupational therapists and therapist assistants to assist with patient care;

patient flow and maintenance of the treatment space and facility.

Performance Responsibilities

A. School District

  • Provide evaluation and assessment of injuries sustained by school's students during school athletic events.
  • Provide appropriate first aide and emergency care to injured athletes as appropriate and within the scope of practice of an athletic trainer.
  • Direct students and parents to follow up with appropriate health care providers when necessary.
  • Provide treatment and reconditioning of athletes following injury under the direction of a physician.
  • Ensure coordination and communication is ongoing between injured student athletes, parents, coaching staff, team or family physician or other healthcare providers involved in the treatment of injury.
  • Participate in injury prevention and risk management activities as requested by contracted school or program.
  • Apply wraps, braces, tape and pads to student athletes as necessary and appropriate.
  • Advise contracted school regarding inventory and requisitioning of supplies.
  • Maintain accurate records of all athletic injuries reported by District's students that occur during school athletic events including any rehabilitation interventions administered by the Athletic Trainer.
  • Prepare any required reports regarding athletic injuries sustained by District's students that occur during school events as requested by the nursing and athletic office.
  • Maintain an emergency plan that includes emergency phone numbers for the contracted school or program.
  • Concussion management to include preseason baseline testing and return to play progressions.
  • Meet with the District's Athletic Director at least two times (2x) per year to review policies and procedures, etc.
  • Maintain the athletic training facility at the District.
  • Advise the District on inventory status and requisitioning of supplies and/or facility management and inspect and take inventory of all team medical kits prior to the beginning of each season.
  • When requested, prepare presentations and speak at educational programs sponsored by the District and coordinate with members of the Contractor's Sports Medicine team (including physicians, physical therapists and others) to present at educational programs for the District.
  • Participate in any out-of-town athletic events as requested by the District.
  • Provide ATC coverage for outside events being sponsored or supported by St. Charles hospital's sports medicine program when available.
  • Assist in the coordination of and participate in injury prevention/risk assessments scheduled for schools and/or community.
