Teacher - Special Education Significant Needs
The Special Education Teacher Significant Support Needs provides intensive specialized instruction, intervention, behavioral supports, and case management services to students with significant cognitive, behavioral, communication, adaptive, and/or functional needs. The teacher collaborates with families, educators, related service providers, and support staff to develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), monitor student progress, and support the development of academic, functional, communication, behavioral, and independent living skills.
A successful Significant Support Needs Special Education Teacher provides highly individualized instruction and intensive supports to students with disabilities whose educational needs require specialized programming and services. The teacher promotes communication, independence, self-regulation, adaptive behavior, functional academics, and meaningful participation in school, community, and postsecondary environments.
This position may be assigned to Learning Lab (LL), Affective Needs (AN), Significant Support Needs (SSN), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), or other self-contained special education programs based upon district needs.
Requirements:
- Education Level Details:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university - License / Certification:
Required to possess or qualify and receive within 30 days of hire for a Colorado Special Education Generalist endorsement or license appropriate to assignment. CPI, Safety Care, or district-approved de-escalation training within 30 days of hire. Teachers assigned to grades K-3 must meet all Colorado READ Act training and evidence-based reading instruction requirements established by the Colorado Department of Education.
Teachers serving dually identified multilingual learners may be required to hold, obtain, or work toward a CLDE endorsement consistent with district and state requirements. - Work Experience:
Required experience providing specialized instruction to students with disabilities. Experience developing and implementing IEPs. Experience with inclusive practices, co-teaching, and MTSS interventions preferred. Experience collaborating with general education staff and families preferred. Experience supporting students with significant cognitive disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, emotional disabilities, or complex communication needs preferred. Experience implementing behavior intervention plans (BIPs) preferred. Experience supervising paraprofessionals preferred. - Other
Skills and Abilities:
Required knowledge of core academic subject assigned. Knowledgeable of state curriculum standards. Bilingual Endorsement preferred. Regular attendance is essential.
Evaluation:
Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with provision of the Board's policy on evaluation of professional personnel.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Instructional Strategies:
- Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the district's curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
- Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in individual students.
- Design instructional activities which enhance the objectives and which reflect an interdisciplinary/thematic approach to teaching.
- Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, equipment, and technology that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned and present subject matter according to guidelines established by the district, board policies, and administrative regulations.
- Conduct assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities.
- Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
- Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements.
