Job Summary

Analyzes specifications, lays out metal stock, sets up and operates machine tools required to fabricate and repair metalworking dies, cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and hand tools. Skilled in making all types of tools and dies for complex production parts and tooling. Lays out, fabricates, assembles, and proves dies such as tool masters, deep draw and compound dies for punch presses, assembly press machines, etc.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Analyses specifications, computes dimensions, plans layout, fabricates, and tests tools and dies. Determines assembly methods and operation sequences to achieve minimal or no review by others. Measures, marks, and scribes metal stock. Determines reference points and tooling holes, often with multiple non‑parallel planes.

Sets up and operates major machine tools—lathes, milling machines, EDM tooling machines, shapers, grinders, punch presses—to make tooling and dies. Verifies conformance to specifications and repairs equipment to exacting tolerances (±0.0001).

Creates and repairs cutting tools, fixtures, jigs, and dies for the shop’s major machines, using carbide, steel, aluminum, Inconel, titanium, etc. Designs complex experimental tooling for new products.

Troubleshoots tool and die problems, using resourcefulness and initiative to ensure efficiency and productivity.

Applies in‑depth knowledge of tool & die making and machine shop theory to develop complex tools and dies, including material and grade selection to balance life, cost, and production needs.

Participates in team problem‑solving, team building, and process improvement. Communicates effectively, both written and verbal, and assists other department members.

Interprets specifications from blueprints, sketches, models, or verbal orders to determine materials and machines needed.

Repairs machines and other tools used to manufacture tools and dies.

Equipment / Process Responsibilities

Performs duties using specialized tools and equipment to machine highly complex and expensive tools and dies. Maintains a careful toolkit and advises on special tool purchases or replacements.

Material or Product Responsibilities

Ensures precise documentation and adherence to highly complex tool and die making principles. Maintains proper functioning of tool and die components for efficient production.

Responsibility for Work of Others

Communicates quality, safety, or timeliness issues. Trains employees of equal or lower classification in tool and die making methods. Coordinates with all manufacturing levels, including supervision, machinists, and engineers.

Safety Responsibilities

Follows good house‑keeping and machine safety practices. Enforces company safety rules to protect fellow workers.

Initiative and Ingenuity

Solves problems in CNC programming, setup, and operation. Adapts tooling and shop aids to complete tasks. Suggests workflow or equipment improvements and handles additional tasks as needed.

Work Environment

Environmental Surroundings: Machine shop setting with noise, temperature fluctuations, and an intense work culture.

Unavoidable Hazards: Cuts, bruises, burns, finger and hand injuries, muscle strains, exposure to mechanical parts, metalworking fluids, heating elements, and airborne particles. Protective safety wear required.

Effort

Physical: Ability to lift up to 50 lb. Requires hand and finger manipulation and may involve extended sitting or standing.

Mental: Interpret technical blueprints and schematics; organize work for maximum efficiency.

Visual: Close attention to detail; ability to read precision instruments such as micrometers, calipers, comparators, and gauges.

Pay Range

$40.70 to $46.68 /hr (LG 12 – 2nd Shift, Monday through Friday 1:00 pm to 9:30 pm)
