Director of Financial Aid and Scholarships Job Description

Under the direction of the Vice President of Student Services, the Director of Financial Aid provides administrative oversight of the Financial Aid Office at Compton College. The Director ensures compliance with federal, state, and institutional policies, procedures, and regulations that pertain to eligibility determination, awarding, and disbursement of financial aid. The Director is responsible for the hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of assigned personnel.

Responsibilities
  • Interpret, apply, and enforce federal, state, and institutional financial aid policies, procedures, and regulations related to eligibility determination, awarding, and disbursement of financial aid.
  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate assigned financial aid personnel, ensuring compliance with policies and excellent customer service.
  • Participate in professional development functions locally, regionally, and nationally to maintain compliance with policies and regulations.
  • Participate in financial aid outreach activities and Compton College-sponsored functions on and off-campus to educate prospective and current students about financial aid opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain a Financial Aid Policies & Procedures Manual in compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations.
  • Collaborate with the U.S. Department of Education, California Student Aid Commission, and the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office.
  • Collaborate with Administrative Services to ensure accurate and timely financial aid reports, debit card issuance, drawdowns, and disbursement schedules.
  • Collaborate with the Foundation for Compton Community College District and other entities to determine eligibility, award, and disburse local financial aid.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Community Relations and Foundation to develop and update outreach materials and communication tracks across various media.
  • Serve as the main liaison between Compton College and third‑party vendors for aid disbursement.
  • Participate on college committees, work groups, and campus‑wide initiatives addressing enrollment management and student retention.
  • Draft, submit, assess, and revise college documentation, including accreditation and program review materials.
  • Direct the preparation, maintenance, and on‑time submission of narrative and statistical reports related to assigned activities and personnel.
  • Prepare for and participate in audits and investigations by federal, state, and institutional entities.
  • Develop and prepare the annual preliminary budget for the Financial Aid Office, analyzing and reviewing financial data, controlling expenditures, and monitoring accounts.
  • Determine hardware and software needs, coordinate with Information Technology Services, and oversee equipment installation.
  • Operate computer hardware, software, and office equipment to complete duties.
  • Advise prospective and current students on financial aid, review judgment cases, and render decisions.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to resolve issues, address conflicts, and exchange information.
  • Meet with students to address complaints and concerns regarding aid eligibility, awarding, and disbursement.
  • Maintain current knowledge of federal, state, and institutional financial aid policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Attend various meetings, including staff, division, area, and college district functions.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities
  • In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and institutional regulations governing financial aid, including grants, scholarships, work‑study, and loan programs.
  • Knowledge of data processing systems, computer hardware, and software required to determine eligibility, award, and disburse financial aid.
  • Knowledge of protocols and skills to train and supervise personnel, accounting procedures, and budget management.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse student backgrounds.
  • Ability to develop positive rapport with personnel and foster teamwork.
