To perform advanced professional and technical administrative assistance in conducting comprehensive analyses and coordination of municipal policies, organization, and finance and services.
This is the journey level of the Administrative Assistant III series. This class may be distinguished from the II level by the difficulty and complexity of work performed and by the direct supervision of lower level professional personnel. This class requires the frequent use of a high degree of independent judgment in making decisions.
Direction is provided by higher-level departmental personnel. Exercises direct supervision over assigned personnel.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIESDuties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Assist in the development of goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.
Investigate, interpret, analyze, and prepare recommendations in relation to proposals for new programs, grants, and services.
Analyze, interpret, and explain city policies and procedures; confer with members of the public to explain policies and programs.
Investigate and prepare reports on specific requests and complaints pertaining to various governmental activities or legislation.
Coordinate City-wide legislative activities and supervise other federal grants; develop and coordinate special projects such as assessment proceedings, EDA grant monitoring, sewer improvement project, and five year master plan.
Conduct research, and analyze statistical and other data; make recommendations on administrative, operational problems, policies, and procedures.
Assist in budget preparation and review; report on the budget status of various activities.
Prepare agenda and minutes of weekly staff and Department Director meetings; attend meetings and perform administrative tasks.
Coordinate inter-departmental or inter-agency activities of the City departments and divisions.
Supervise, train, and evaluate assigned staff.
Perform related duties as assigned.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge ofPrinciples and practices of public administration and legislation.
Principles and practices of organization and management.
Advance research techniques, sources and availability of information, and methods of report presentation.
Applicable federal, state and local laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to local government operations and legislation.
Respond to citizen inquiries.
Experience and TrainingAny combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
ExperienceThree years of responsible experience comparable to that of an Administrative Assistant II in the City of Compton.
TrainingEquivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in public administration or a closely related field.
EXAMINATIONThe purpose of this examination is to establish an eligible list from which vacant position(s) may be filled.
Only the most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination and interview process.
Phase one (1) is a written examination (weighted 50%) which will measure all or portions of the above knowledge and skills. Phase two (2) is an oral examination (weighted 50%) that will be administered by an appraisal panel to evaluate professional qualifications, background and suitability. A passing score for each phase is 70%. Each candidate will be notified via e-mail of their status at each step of the recruitment.
The City of Compton reserves the right to utilize alternative testing methods, if deemed necessary. Failure in one phase of the examination shall be grounds for declaring the applicant as failing in the entire examination, and as disqualified for subsequent parts of an examination.

ELIGIBLE LISTSRecruitment may be conducted on a (a) promotional basis, (b) open-competitive basis, or (c) promotional and open-competitive basis simultaneously. All candidates who attain an overall score of at least 70.00 (open-competitive) and at least 75.00 (promotional) will be placed in rank order on the relevant eligible list(s).
PLEASE NOTEAll permanent City employees that attain an overall score of at least 75.00 will be placed on both the promotional eligible list and the open-competitive eligible list. All City employees that attain a score of 70.00 on EACH PHASE of the examination but an overall score of less than 75.00 will be placed on the open-competitive eligible list only. Each eligible list shall remain in effect one (1) year from the date of its establishment unless it is extended, abolished or exhausted.
