General Statement of DutiesPerforms responsible protective and civil service work for the Sheriff's Office.
Job Responsibilities- Patrol the County and enforce Federal, State and local laws.
- Make arrests; serve civil papers, warrants and subpoenas.
- Issue citations for traffic violations.
- Complete accident and incident reports and testify in court.
- Operate a patrol car and observe for law violations, suspicious activities, and disturbances of law and order.
- Serve civil and criminal papers; warrants; summons; subpoenas; and court orders.
- Transport arrestees, inmates and mental patients to correctional facilities; medical appointments or the courthouse; maintaining physical security.
- Conduct preliminary investigations of crime and accident scenes; interview suspects, complainants and witnesses and take photographs.
- Provide backup to other law enforcement personnel.
- Assist in collecting and preserving evidence.
- Conduct and document proper security checks of homes and businesses.
- Complete all required reports and forms, including accident and incident reports.
- Provide security and direct traffic for special activities such as parades and athletic events.
- Conduct driver license check points.
- Maintain the appearance of vehicles and assigned equipment.
- Maintain order and safety in the courts; provide security for court proceedings and screen all citizens entering the courtroom.
- Testify in court.
- Adhere to department's safety rules and regulations.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Skills and Abilities
- General knowledge of federal, state and local laws as it pertains to law enforcement policies and procedures for both adult and juvenile.
- General knowledge of the North Carolina General statutes as it pertains to the serving and handling of civil papers.
- General knowledge of the boundaries and geography of the county.
- General knowledge of first aid and CPR techniques.
- General knowledge of the criminal justice system and court procedures.
- Skill in the use of firearms; intoximeters; communications equipment; photographic equipment and other standard and specialized equipment.
- Ability to analyze situations and react quickly; effectively and adopt reasonable courses of action with regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances.
- Ability to operate a computer.
- Skill in gathering information and preparing reports.
- Ability to communicate effectively; both orally and in writing.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with coworkers; judges; attorneys;
Clerk of Court; probation officers; inmates; children; school personnel; businesses; civic and community organizations and the general public.
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and some basic law enforcement experience.
Licenses and Certifications- Valid North Carolina Driver license and at least 21 years of age.
- Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) certificate issued by the State of North Carolina. (Slightly lower entry rate of pay until BLET certificate is obtained.)
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational support functions of climbing; balancing; stooping; kneeling; crouching; crawling; reaching; standing; walking; pushing; pulling; lifting; gripping; hearing and repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform light work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently; and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
- Must possess visual acuity necessary to operate a computer terminal and operate vehicles or other equipment.
- Must be able to work in environmental conditions that require both inside and outside work with no effective protection of weather; subject to extreme cold: temperatures below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour; subject to extreme heat: temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour.
- Worker is subject to sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level.
- Must be able to work in conditions that are subject to hazards; including a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts; electrical current; working on scaffolding and high places; exposure to high heat; or exposure to chemicals.
- May be subject to atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory of the skin such as fumes; odors; dusts; mists; gases; or poor ventilation.
- Must be able to function in narrow aisles or passageways.
- Must be able to work in conditions that are subject to contact with potentially infectious bodily fluids.
