Police Dispatcher II - Lateral

The Concord Police Department is seeking a qualified, POST-certified Police Dispatcher II to provide safe and efficient dispatch services in a busy, high‑pressure environment. The successful candidate will perform radio and telephone dispatch duties, monitor status, gather and disseminate information, maintain records, and assist in training entry‑level dispatchers.

Responsibilities
  • Receives, classifies, prioritizes, and responds to routine and emergency calls, entering information into the computer and transmitting messages.
  • Assigns calls to police units, determines required response resources, and coordinates with patrol supervisors.
  • Monitors video terminals and radio frequencies, making online changes as needed and calling out personnel and agencies.
  • Determines appropriate communication channels and research resources, selecting from telephone lines, radio channels, and computerized systems.
  • Provides information on warrants, vehicle records, driver’s license status, parole, and criminal history to officers and other parties.
  • Accesses and updates information in law‑enforcement data systems containing confidential data.
  • Cont actors persons in the internal chain of command, relatives, employers, hospitals, public‑safety personnel, and other agencies to obtain information.
  • Monitors public‑safety, emergency preparedness, and local government radio traffic and takes appropriate actions.
  • Maintains logs and records of calls, equipment status, and time‑keeping.
  • Follows alternative procedures when equipment malfunctions, performing shutdowns, restarts, and routine maintenance.
  • Performs county‑wide radio system duties, issuing bulletins per county protocol.
  • Assists in training and supports entry‑level dispatchers.
  • Performs other assigned duties and promotes the City’s Mission, Vision, and Values.
  • Qualifications
    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • At least three years of related work experience, including one year in a POST‑certified law‑enforcement communications center.
    • Successful completion of a POST‑certified police dispatcher course and a minimum net typing speed of 35 words per minute; a valid typing certificate issued within the last 12 months is required.
    • Normal or correctable hearing and eyesight; clear and audible voice for radio and telephone communications.
    • Valid California driver’s license with satisfactory driving record.
    • Successful completion of background investigation, including fingerprint and polygraph.
    • Strong written and oral communication, rapid decision‑making, emotional stability, and ability to multi‑task under pressure.
    • Technological aptitude to operate multiple computers, radios, and recording equipment.
    • Familiarity with Concord city maps and ability to read locations and routes.
    • Knowledge of California laws, FCC regulations, and computer‑aided dispatch systems.
    Recruitment Incentives
    • Signing bonus up to $10,000: $5,000 after the one‑year probation and $5,000 at 18 months of employment.
    • Front‑loaded leave accruals (80 hours vacation and 96 hours sick leave) in the first year.
