Duties and Responsibilities of Elementary School Traveling Music Teachers
Elementary School Traveling Music Teachers are responsible to the District Program Administrator, Music Education in administrative and instructional matters falling within the Music Program. While in a school building, elementary school traveling music teachers are responsible to the school principal for the care, control, and instruction of students in their charge.
The duties and responsibilities of Elementary School Traveling Music Teachers are as follows:
- To act as an advocate, resource person, and facilitator of music activities in the schools in the community.
- To develop and direct an instrumental music program in the schools served.
- To work with students and parents in the selection of the proper instrument for study.
- To organize intermediate or advanced classes of band and/or orchestra for the experienced students.
- To prepare occasional vocal and/or instrumental programs for school or parent meetings.
- To issue and supervise care of district-owned musical instruments.
- To work with the District Program Administrator, Music Education in preparing students for District-wide honor groups and area festivals.
- To develop vocal music activities such as choir, chorus, and/or glee club.
- To instruct vocal groups in all schools assigned.
- To act as a resource person to the classroom teacher with regard to the improvement of teaching of classroom music and the song flute (Tonette) program.
- To provide opportunities for students to see and hear live performances by amateurs and professionals in school and in the community.
- To work with principal of each school in developing an instructional schedule in harmony with the philosophy of the District Music Education Program and the policies of the local school.
- To cooperate with music teachers at intermediate and high school levels in order to ensure efficient articulation.
- To attend job‑related meetings and activities specified by the District Program Administrator, Music Education or Principals of the schools served (as teaching schedule permits).
- To perform those non‑instructional duties and responsibilities, including supervisory and advisory duties, as may be prescribed by the Board of Education.

Step placement is based on prior years of K‑12 teaching experience while in the possession of a valid teaching credential. At least 75% of a school year must have been served to count as a year of teaching experience. Classification is based on semester units completed after your Bachelor’s degree was issued. The maximum step placement for a new hire is Step 15, which means we can accept a maximum of fourteen years of prior experience (if you qualify for Class 4 placement).
