Title:

Special Education Assistant II / Classroom

Definition: Under general supervision and evaluation by the site administrator, performs work of moderate difficulty in providing specialized instructional support services in various pre‑K to 12th and adult emotionally disturbed, autistic, behavioral, bilingual, full inclusion, or assistive technology special education settings. Performs other related duties as required.

  • Communicate regularly with the instructional team regarding students’ daily performance.
  • Under supervision, works with students in group or individual settings to assist with specific instructional tasks and accommodate special needs.
  • Assist students with special needs in learning or using special equipment, instructional media, and tests.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining appropriate social behaviors through positive reinforcement techniques, activities, and materials.
  • Encourage and assist students with special needs in communicating and engaging in social activities such as field trips and extra‑curricular activities.
  • Supervise students with special needs during snack, lunch, outdoor, and campus activities.
  • Assist in learning gross motor skills and teaching independent mobility.
  • Support students of diverse levels and types of disabilities, gender, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Prepare records and perform clerical duties related to special education programs.
  • May lift and move students with special needs.
  • Assist in teaching self‑feeding, grooming, dressing, toileting, and other personal care skills.
  • May assist with community‑based instruction.
  • May be required to travel from location to location.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Training and

    Experience:

    High school graduation and one year experience working with students, or one year of college‑level coursework related to the assignment. Successful completion of the Instructional Assistant Proficiency Examination and/or appropriate certification.
  • Knowledge of: Appropriate subject matter and special instructional or communication procedures; individual differences in children; correct English usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and mathematics; general classroom procedures, practices, and equipment; needs of physically challenged and/or severely emotionally disturbed students; techniques of learning reinforcement and behavior modification; diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of students with special needs.
  • Skill in: Applying special instructional or communication procedures; following oral and written directions; communicating clearly both orally and in writing; recordkeeping; establishing and maintaining cooperative relationships with staff, students, and parents; reading, writing, and arithmetic; keeping school and student matters confidential; understanding and appropriately responding to the needs of all students and having a genuine liking for students.
  • Perform duties with or without accommodation; learn to interpret rules, policies, regulations.
Licenses & Certifications
  • Valid California Driver’s License may be required.
  • First Aid and CPR certification required every 2 years.
  • Must meet proficiency requirements per state and federal laws (Mandated Reporting, Blood Borne Pathogens).
  • Pre‑employment fingerprinting and TB testing required.
Physical Abilities

Sufficient vision to monitor students, read instructional materials; hearing and speaking to exchange information; frequently walking, reaching, holding with arms, bending at waist, crouching/squatting; dexterity to assist with specialized equipment and office equipment; pushing wheelchairs; lifting/manipulating objects or persons up to 25 lbs. with or without assistance.
