Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Engineering Permit Technician to support the City of Daly City’s permitting and development review operations. This position will primarily focus on processing over-the-counter permits and providing engineering support for public and private development-related activities. The ideal candidate will have a strong engineering background and experience working with municipal permitting, plan review, or development services processes.
This role also offers the opportunity to assist with larger and more complex development applications and engineering reviews, though this experience is not required. The selected candidate will work onsite at the City of Daly City offices on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.
Responsibilities- Review and process over-the-counter permits in accordance with applicable municipal codes, engineering standards, and development requirements.
- Provide engineering support related to permitting, development review, and municipal infrastructure projects.
- Review plans, calculations, specifications, construction documents, and supporting materials for completeness and compliance.
- Assist developers, contractors, property owners, consultants, and the public regarding permit requirements, plan review procedures, application status, and related engineering inquiries.
- Receive and process permit applications and construction documents; coordinate routing and plan review activities between city departments and outside agencies.
- Review, approve, and issue administrative over-the-counter permits in accordance with established procedures and guidelines.
- Assist with processing and reviewing larger or more complex development applications, as assigned.
- Interpret engineering drawings, technical reports, municipal regulations, ordinances, and department standards.
- Calculate and apply applicable permit, plan review, inspection, and related fees.
- Maintain accurate project and permit documentation, records, and status updates within applicable systems and filing processes.
- Support permitting operations through technical, administrative, and customer service‑related activities.
- Coordinate responses to inquiries, concerns, and requests in a timely and professional manner.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with city staff, clients, consultants, developers, contractors, outside agencies, and the public.
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related engineering discipline.
- Strong engineering background with knowledge of municipal permitting, plan review, development services, or public works processes.
- Experience reviewing engineering plans, permits, or development‑related applications.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple assignments and priorities.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and standard engineering or permitting software applications.
- Ability to work onsite in Daly City, CA on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.
- Valid Driver License.
- Prior experience supporting municipal agencies or local government operations.
- Experience processing development applications or complex engineering permits.
- California PE license is preferred but not required.
- Familiarity with California municipal codes, development review procedures, and engineering standards.
- Experience working directly with developers, contractors, and public agencies.
