Police Officer Trainee
Opportunity to train and become a sworn Police Officer in the Concord Police Department after completing a POST‑approved Police Academy. The trainee position is a temporary, at‑will role with mandatory benefits required by law. Upon successful completion of the academy, trainees are promoted to a full‑time Police Officer with the full salary and benefits package.
About the RoleAs a trainee you will attend a POST‑approved Police Academy. Success on the POST‑approved written examination and academy training is required for employment. The training lasts six months, after which you will be appointed to a Police Officer position and begin an 18‑month probation period.
Responsibilities- Attend the POST‑approved Police Academy
- Pass the POST‑approved written examination
- Complete academic and physical training required for appointment as a Police Officer
- Prepare clear, concise, comprehensive written reports
- Follow oral and written instructions
- Deal courteously and effectively with the general public
- Ability to observe accurately and remember names, faces, numbers, incidents, and places
- Think and act quickly in emergencies
- Judge situations and people accurately
- Learn standard operating procedures of police headquarters, radio‑telephone, and keyboard‑type communications equipment
- Understand and interpret laws and regulations
- Become proficient in self‑defense techniques and the care and use of firearms
- Follow oral and written instructions
- Deal courteously and effectively with the general public
- Embrace the City’s Mission, Vision and Values
- Minimum age 21 years
- Have a valid California Driver’s License with satisfactory driving record
- Legally authorized to work in the United States
- Minimum of 60 college semester units (or equivalent); at least 30 units considered
- Quality POST T‑Score of 50 or higher on the POST Pellet B (valid within 12 months)
- Meet physical, health, and vision standards as specified by the department
- Health insurance with generous premium contribution while enrolled in academy
- Enrollment in Social Security and CalPERS (non‑sworn rate of 2% @62)
- New CalPERS members eligible for 2.7% @57 plus Social Security after academy completion
- Shift differential ranging from 3% – 8%
- Specialty assignments such as Detective units, Canine, Community Impact, Motorcycle, Traffic Investigator, SWAT, etc.
- Master Officer Program – 10% at 15 years sworn service with 3 completed specialties
- Longevity – 5% at 18 years sworn service
- $250 per month bilingual pay for qualifying languages
- Education and POST Certificate incentives up to 10%
