Landscape Gardener

Job Overview

The City of Concord is seeking an experienced Landscape Gardener in the Public Works Department. This position is open until filled; the first review of applications will take place the week of January 5, 2026.

• Perform parks maintenance, gardening, weed abatement, and grounds keeping work in assigned areas (parks, traffic medians, open space, public rights‑of‑way, ball fields).
• Measure results and data related to desired program outcomes daily and suggest improvements.
• Provide lead direction to assigned work crew.
• Perform routine inspection and maintenance of irrigation systems.
• Monitor condition of turf, ornamental plants, shrubs, hedges, flowers, and trees; report diseases and pests.
• Assist with installation of header boards, portable picnic tables, barbecue pit repairs, barricade fencing, rough carpentry, and concrete work.
• Prepare soils for planting and cultivate plants, shrubs, and trees.
• Perform other parks maintenance tasks as needed.

• Background in horticulture.
• Experience repairing and maintaining tools and equipment used in landscape maintenance.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Proactive in identifying problems and suggesting solutions.
• High level of customer service and excellent communication skills.
• Comfortable working independently and as a team.

Working knowledge of methods, tools, materials and practices used in parks and ground maintenance; knowledge of plant names, diseases, pests, irrigation systems, fertilizers, fungicides, herbicides, and pesticides; ability to adapt to changing assignments, operate equipment, input data, and provide lead direction.

• High school diploma or equivalent plus 9 units in ornamental horticulture or related field, or specialized training/certificates.
• Three years of employment in grounds maintenance.

Requires California Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record. Must provide current DMV history report dated within 3 months of closing date.
