Position: Maintenance Laborer (Seasonal)

MAINTENANCE LABORER

The City of Concord Public Works Department is recruiting for Maintenance Laborers to work for the City's Parks Division to assist in maintaining the cleanliness of the City's parks so that they are well‑kept for the enjoyment of our residents. This recruitment is open and continuous, and the list established by this recruitment may be used to fill future part‑time, limited‑term vacancies for up to one year, as vacancies arise.

Parks Services provides safe, aesthetically pleasing parks designed and maintained to meet the diverse needs for active and passive recreation and leisure activities.

What You Will Be Doing

Under direct supervision and independently, the Maintenance Laborer will perform litter/trash pick‑up, restroom clean‑up, general maintenance, leaf/debris pick‑up and miscellaneous duties in park locations and other areas throughout the City. The Maintenance Laborer will also perform other duties as assigned.

Part‑time/Seasonal Maintenance Laborers are hired by the City's Public Works Department throughout the year, on an as‑needed basis. These are part‑time/temporary positions, limited to 999 hours per fiscal year, provide no benefits, and are paid at various hourly rates according to position related abilities.

Responsibilities (Examples of duties include, but are not limited to)
  • Assisting with basic grounds‑keeping
  • Public Works maintenance and construction activities
  • Picking up and removing trash
  • Maintaining park restrooms
  • Leaf/debris clean‑up
  • Performing data entry related to parks assets, work order management, and other relevant platforms
  • Performing other duties as assigned
Selection Process
  • Submit a completed City of Concord application, a current California DMV history report, and the required supplemental question responses online yofconcord.org/jobs.
  • All qualified applications and supplemental responses will be competitively evaluated, and those candidates demonstrating the strongest qualifications for the position will be invited to interview.
  • Successful candidates will be provided a conditional offer of employment, and must clear DOJ live scan, medical evaluation and other related components.
Conviction History

If you receive a conditional job offer, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the job for which you have received a conditional job offer.

If a conflict exists, you will be asked to present any evidence of rehabilitation that may mitigate the conflict, except when federal or state regulations bar employment in specific circumstances. Having a conviction history does not automatically preclude you from a job with the City of Concord.

Qualifications Knowledge of
  • Basic equipment such as shovels, rakes, small power mowers, spray equipment and pneumatic tools
  • Safety techniques for removing litter, cleaning hardscapes and assisting in basic landscape maintenance labor in the City's parks
Ability to
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, staff and the general public
  • Write clearly in order to complete records and documentation of actions taken
  • Utilize desktop and mobile computer devices
  • Provide exceptional customer service
Education / Experience

Education:

Satisfactory completion of high school, or the equivalent.

Experience:

Six months of experience performing work involving the general public. Work experience in park clean‑up, landscaping, or litter clean‑up is highly desirable.

Other Requirements

Must possess a valid California driver's license (Class A, B or

C) and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment.
