Maintenance Utility Mechanic

Position Summary

The Facilities Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department is seeking an experienced Maintenance Utility Mechanic. This position is responsible for the repair, maintenance, and troubleshooting of HVAC equipment and systems, as well as other utility, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical equipment as assigned.

• Diagnose, repair, and maintain HVAC/R equipment and systems.
• Perform preventative maintenance on all equipment.
• Inspect, maintain, and repair air conditioning and heating units, thermostatic controls, regulators, and motors.
• Maintain preventative maintenance schedules for filters, moving parts, and balancing controls.
• Inspect and service pumps, motors, bearings, and packing.
• Inspect and repair plumbing systems, valves, fixtures, and sewer lines.
• Install and remove sheet metal ductwork and other utility lines.
• Maintain park, parking lot, and building security lighting equipment.
• Conduct minor electrical repairs and troubleshoot lighting systems.
• Inspect and troubleshoot automatic clock systems and civil defense sirens.
• Follow safe work procedures and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
• Report equipment malfunctions, required repairs, and safety infractions to supervisors.
• Coordinate with supervisors on job priorities, progress, and maintenance issues.
• Respond to emergency or complaint calls.
• Perform additional work as assigned.

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Equivalent to completion of a four‑year apprenticeship program in mechanical maintenance; journey‑level experience may substitute.
• Technical knowledge in HVAC/R, basic electricity, and plumbing.
• Experience with construction‑related utility work.
• Strong attention to detail, organization, and task prioritization.
• Commitment to high‑quality service and professional development.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• California driver’s license with satisfactory driving record.
