Duties
* Conduct inspections of approximately 42 miles of railroad track and associated appurtenances to identify deviations in cross-level, gage, profile, and alignment.
* Investigate railroad accidents and derailments to determine causes; and inspect tracks and equipment to identify the location and possible causes of derailment.
* Conduct preventive maintenance and repair on standard gauge railroad track and on various railroad equipment and appurtenances.
* Perform maintenance and repair duties while operating rail mounted hydraulic equipment.
* Prepare track inspection reports identifying necessary corrective action and conduct follow-up inspections as appropriate.
* Perform or direct a work crew in re-railing to safely put the cars or engine back on tracks. Requirements Conditions of employment
* Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
* This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
* This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance.
* This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
* Valid Commercial Driver's License - Class A needs to be obtained within 180 days of entrance.
* This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
* The incumbent is required to maintain current Army Railroad Track Certification IAW AR 420-72.
* Incumbent must be able to operate rail mounted hydraulic equipment.
* Incumbent must complete Department of the Army Railroad Safety Course and pass exam within 30 days; and attend refresher annually.
* This position is inclement weather essential; 90% of work is performed outside in all weather conditions, which includes extreme weather conditions.
* Incumbent is subject to be called to Terminal in case of derailment.
* Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. Qualifications Who May Apply: US Citizens Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious;
spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element):
Ability to do the work of an Railroad Repairer without more than normal supervision. Ability to perform common preventive maintenance and repair duties on standard gauge railroad track, on various railroad equipment, and appurtenances. Ability to assist in the replacement of worn rails, angle bars, switch stands, points, frogs, tongue and mate switches, cross ties, and switch ties. Ability to inspect and recognize the full range of railway defects, to determine the probable cause of those deficiencies.
Ability to work without close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who would observes tasks and ensure they are properly performed.

* PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Performs extremely strenuous work for long periods. Frequently lifts and carries tools and equipment weighing over 80 pounds or exerts comparable effort in moving and positioning railroad track components. Work involves frequent or continuous bending, reaching, pushing, kneeling, lifting, and similar body and limb movements.
* WORKING CONDITIONS:
Railroad Repairers work outside, often in seasonal temperature and weather extremes and are subject to loud noises, possible burns, fumes from insect sprays, and smoke; dirt, cuts, and grease or oil; insect bites; and possible injuries from handling equipment. May be required to wear protective gloves, hard-toe shoes, safety glasses, and similar protective devices. Any unusual environmental working condition that may arise will be compensated for under an appropriate category of the environmental pay regulation.
