Job Description
Positions available: winter maintenance contracts begin October 2026 to April 2027. This is a temporary, full‑time (40‑hour) position within the York Region Public Works Roads, Traffic & Fleet department.
Key Details- Salary: $34.61 – $37.61 per hour
- Schedule: 40 hours per week, rotating shifts, standby duties, and work outside regular business hours as required (including adverse weather conditions)
- Locations: Central Patrol Yard, North Patrol Yard, South East Roads Operations Centre, South West Roads Operations Centre, and other various locations (primary: CA)
- Union: CUPE Local 4900
- Operate specialized heavy‑duty regional and rented equipment (dump trucks, loaders, tractors, snow plows, chainsaws, grass‑cutting equipment)
- Perform manual labor tasks necessary to maintain and repair roads
- Ensure compliance with York Region road maintenance standards, including maintenance of road signs, guideposts, hazard protection devices, and drainage installations
- Report to the District Roads Supervisor, following technical direction from the Lead Operator
- Work in a team environment, communicating effectively with internal and external customers
- Secondary school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Valid Ontario Class "DZ" driver’s licence
- Experience operating specialized heavy‑duty road maintenance equipment and related machinery such as dump trucks, loaders, tractors, and snow plows using either a tandem or single‑axle roadway plow/salter
- Knowledge of summer and winter road maintenance activities and operations
- Knowledge of equipment vehicle operations as they relate to road maintenance activities
- Knowledge of specialized maintenance and repair of road signs, guideposts, hazard protection devices, and drainage installations is considered an asset
