Physical Education Teacher
The Director of Athletics, Recreation, and Wellness position exists to serve the CA community by providing vision, leadership, and direction for a competitive interscholastic athletics program that advances the school’s mission and vision. The position directly reports to the Head of School and is responsible for the operation and accountability of the athletics department, which includes leadership, management, supervision, fundraising, and school-wide involvement by promoting the student‑athlete experience, advocating for students’ academic success, enhancing competitive opportunities for student‑athletes and coaches, and hiring and retaining quality staff and coaches committed to the boarding school experience.
The director is also charged with providing recreational and educational wellness programming to foster a well‑rounded student experience. This includes teaching courses in health and wellness.
- Direct all aspects of the athletics department, stewarding and shepherding the growth of 30 programs and their student‑athletes in mind, body, and spirit.
- Establish and promote a holistic understanding of the value of athletics and its direct connection to the teaching and learning program at CA.
- Research and pilot additional sports offerings.
- Recruit, hire, support, and evaluate coaching, program, and administrative staff who are aligned with program goals.
- Identify coaches inclined to fully immerse themselves in the boarding school experience—teaching, coaching, residential life, and the arts.
- Develop and implement initiatives that cultivate healthy, dynamic athletic programs that represent the institution well.
- Provide leadership directing all elements of financial and budgetary affairs for the athletics departments.
- Inform CA policy and practice relative to athletics, and represent the institution relative to those policies and practices with external stakeholders and groups including EIL, ISL, NEPSAC.
- Plan, resource, and execute athletic‑related events and competitions—including the promotion of the athletic program and its achievements to the community, including fundraising events and public relations efforts.
- Recognize and comply with the laws, policies, rules, and regulations governing the school and its employees.
- Be well‑versed on the rules NCAA, and those of any other conferences relevant to the student experience at CA.
- Be a visible and engaging leader for the program.
- Partner within institutional stakeholders to plan, execute, and evaluate recruitment and retention strategies.
- In consultation with the Head of School, partner with the Director of Auxiliary programs to build a robust seasonal offering of academies and camps.
- Be a partner to the advancement team in direct fundraising, alumni, and engagement activities to support departmental and institutional goals.
- Organize and participate in committees, events, and activities that enhance the reputation and understanding of athletics, the campus, and the school.
- Direct the campus recreation and wellness department, including the following:
- Hire, support, and evaluate program and administrative staff who facilitate competitive intramural activities, clubs, fitness/wellness, and drop‑in recreational programming.
- Oversee the development, operations, maintenance, and planning of institutional recreational facilities.
- In consultation with the Head of School, provide leadership over budget and facilities needs and requirements relative to the department;
- Engage with campus stakeholders to leverage recreational programming in support of institutional health and wellness goals.
- Resolve conflicts and issues that may arise within the athletics program, working with coaches, teachers, athletes, parents, and other administrators.
- Bachelor’s degree and at least six years of demonstrated experience (or advanced degree and at least four years of experience) of progressively responsible related work in intercollegiate athletics administration or related experience that includes a minimum of three years leading and/or supervising the work of others.
